What do you think of just putting everything behind you and living a VERY simple life? Just the clothes on your back, maybe?

That's the thing. Have you ever thought of giving them up for a simpler life?

I like the idea of fucking off and living in a tiny cottage in the woods, working the land.

i like the idea but i dont wanna just throw away all my belongings. i mean, i like my computer. i like the internet.

me and my fiancee have talked about the type of house we want in the future. all our aunties and uncles bought these big giant homes in the middle of fucking nowhere and i hate those types of homes. they got 4 bedrooms, all fucking empty. giant walls with nothing on them. house is full of just... stuff. no purpose to anything.

i think a simple home is best. a small one. one full of character and life. right now we live in a small house and we love it.

its rad. we strive to be minimalistic, but its tough with kids. I want them to have/do shit, its tough not spoiling your kids.

we have a pare down plan once we get our shit together. hopefully in 10 years we'll be set.

Picking Chris McCandless is probably a bad choice. He died because of how unprepared he was for the Alaskan wild.

I think the only thing is that eventually, it would seem, that if we got too old we couldn't do like that anymore.

my family has a pretty large garden and we grow probably 90%+ of the vegetables we eat. that said there's still stuff like grains/meat/dairy that we gotta buy but it's honestly kinda a nice feeling just going out week after week and coming back with giant containers full of vegetables to eat / freeze / preserve

I try to avoid buying too much frivolous physical goods too since honestly I kinda like not having a bunch of stuff

I've been a minimalist since I left home, I used to only own a duffel bag and a pair of skis. I slept on a sleeping pad with my one wool blanket

reddit.com/r/minimalism is a nice resource. This is not about having few things, that's only a side effect.

Look around your messy room. Everything you own was once money. That money was once time. That time was once energy. Look around and see how much of your time and energy you spent making a mess for yourself to pay off and repeat the cycle.

I was always accused of being a trust funder. No, I just don't have a horde of shit to manage... it's just a philosophy, not right or wrong. It's the opposite of materialism. You value experiences and not things.

Then fill that time with things that fulfill you instead of work to buy crap you forget you own

Kids can have fun with sticks.
When I was a kid, I had a ton of toys and yet still picked up a stick to pretend it was a sword or a magic staff.

What does spoiling your kids actually accomplish?

I didnt set out to spoil, just happens especially with a large extended family like mine. thats the tough part. as long as he isn't a bratty snob about it, that's fine.
