The most famous and popular that everyone on Earth knows about, movies, video games, comics, altogether. I was thinking about this after reading up on Disney's Avatar land, and how it was built in response to Universal's Harry Potter theme park, and how it's clearly not on Harry Potter's level.

I'm thinking Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Mario, Pokemon, Superman, Batman, and Spiderman?

I question Mickey Mouse relevancy in 2020
Well maybe in US because of how mainstream Disney Parks are...but in the rest of the world? hmm

Star Trek is largely a non-factor outside of predominantly English-speaking countries and Northern Europe in general. It's probably on the same level as Avatar, actually, except that those two franchises have different geographical areas of strength.

Also, Disney as a brand name is way up there for sure. If Disney Princesses counts as a franchise, it might be tier 1.

Definite:
Star Wars
Harry Potter
The Simpsons
Marvel
DC

Maybe:
Pokemon (there is likely a very significant dropoff around currently age 35ish in terms of people being familiar with this)
Lord of the Rings

I can't agree with this. It's everywhere, and parents are going to know it through their kids if nothing else.

I submit Lego.

Yeah, Pokemon is definitely tier 1, the franchise has spanned across several types of media.

The Simpsons might be one that I may question. Is the show still popular? Do young people still watch the show and buy the merchandise?

are we talking popularity or just ubiquity

I guess that's what it comes down to there

I'm gonna guess that, even in 2020, the average person could tell you more details about The Simpsons than about Pokemon (ie character names, catchphrases, iconic moments/imagery, etc). So if we're including Pokemon I say we include The Simpsons.

Hmm, I may actually take that bet, just because Simpsons doesn't seem relevant to kids at all anymore. Hell, "Is Simpsons still relevant?" was being asked in 2009, according to a Google search, and it's waned even further since. It still probably deserves to be in the discussion, but I'd argue Pokemon has more than eclipsed it both in popularity and ubiquity.

One I just thought of, maybe a long shot, and definitely one of the weaker ones named yet, but I'd say The Muppets deserves to at least be considered in the discussion.

This I'd agree with. Muppets and Looney Toons have kinda persevered rather well.

I'd take Star Trek off that list. It's definitely more niche than like Star Wars and the others

I'd also definitely add Winnie the Pooh; it's been everywhere consistently for decades.

maybe Peanuts? I don't know if all of it is but Charlie Brown and especially Snoopy I feel like are everywhere, but it's probably like Tier 2

This is worldwide though. There's no way The Simpsons is even close to Pokemon globally. I think Pokemon is probably the top of tier 1 tbh
