i recall this being a thing but most married men i know seem to be cheap and don't do it.

is it because in the past women were more likely to be treated as objects and decorating them with jewelry kinda showed ownership? i feel like the american woman today is more financially sound and doesnt care for this type of thing as much as they use to.

I think it's more that women these days are utilitarian enough to see jewelry as a needless excess, yet wealthy enough to get it for themselves if they really wanted it anyway

Basically. My girlfriend doesn't ever want it, she prefers experiences or useful things as gifts

Pretty much. There's significantly less culture of "you need to buy your girlfriend/wife jewellery to show them affection," since women are increasingly recognizing how unnecessary that is.

Also everyone's super broke during their formative years of building romantic relationships, so everyone's kind of used to not wasting money on jewellery by the time they do establish themselves well enough to be able to afford more. So there's that too.

My boyfriend has taken me jewelry shopping before. He's also gotten other gifts.

Sure I can afford my own jewelry but I can afford my own everything.

Are you talking randomly or for like birthdays etc?

Ngl, I do like pretty pendants, but I rarely buy jewelry for myself. Bracelets I rarely wear because I like long sleeves, and I don't wear earrings because they catch on my hair or are hidden by it.

One of my sisters has an ex. She used to complain that I gave her more thoughtful/pretty presents than him, which tbh was kinda fucked up because I only gave her stuff on her birthday/holidays.

I'm not very big on jewelry, but especially diamonds. My bf has got me a couple pairs of ear rings, but he understands it's not really my bag.

There's multiple reasons for it. The simplest and most straight-forwards being that men simply don't have the money anymore to consider spending it on jewelry for their wives as anything other than special gifts.

I told my partner if he ever plans to get an engagement ring, to get me either an artificial sapphire or cubic zirconia. I have an issue with the practice of how diamonds have been harvested for generations.
