My wife came across a site aimed towards teaching children to code. Apparently by the end of it they make their own game or app. Thought that was pretty cool, my son is working on it now.

Coding is 10% knowing what to look for and 90% Googling answers on Stack Overflow.

That's a joke, but there's a kernel of truth there in that no developer memorizes everything, so learning to code can seem super daunting at first but it's really, really not.

That's fair, I have absolutely no knowledge of coding and I'm sitting here going through it with him to get a grasp of what it entails. My wife found it and thought it might be a good idea to get him learning it because, why the fuck not? If it is something he can learn early and get a jump on it who knows how it could help him in the future.

Oh, it's absolutely a great thing. Coding jobs aren't going away any time soon, so it's a nice skill to have.

What I meant by my last post is that it may seem more difficult than it really is at first, but don't let that scare him off. It's all about learning the basics. In my job, most of my work is reusing/repurposing code I've already written, or reminding myself of things via Google. There's nothing like having to memorize every single thing.

Coding is simple. Syntax might not be. But if you can subdivide a task into smaller tasks until you get to the basic operations a computer can actually perform, it's not hard to do.

First, how old is your son? Just curious at the age you're getting him to learn at.

He has A LOT to gain from it. Learning how to code isn't just learning about sheer programming. It's also developing logic and critical thinking in the process. If your son keeps at it, he may do very good at math and science at school.

Honestly if all your son learns is how to effectively google that's useful.

I can legit think of at least two users here who still don't know how to use a search engine >_>

My son is 7, he is already way way ahead of the curve in math, they haven't really started any real science yet.

Lol, I know this is probably a little bit of a jab at some people but I know what you mean. I consider myself to be fairly computer literate only because of Google. My wife is constantly asking me how to fix things and some things I can do with a little bit of trial and error other things I'm just like, "I gotta google that shit."

It's somehow a real skill to have if you didn't grow up around the internet like we did. I'm sure your sons generation will grasp it almost across the board but there will always be computer illiterate people out there. I'm only 31 and I still run into people around my age or even younger who need me to help with tech stuff that I literally google and just send them the link. Takes about twenty seconds of my time if the issue is more obscure.

Trying to break my mom's habit of playing 20 questions whenever she tries to talk to me about an actor or actress and she can't remember the name. No, I don't remember that one spy show that ran for two seasons in the late 90s starring the guy with dark hair... let me google it.

I went to a summer camp with that focus when I was younger, and it ended up being my university major.

First result on Google is:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0810788/

7 seasons and started in 2007. I'm guessing that's not it. >_>

It was a hypothetical, but with that said Burn Notice is an awesome show and Jeffrey Donovan is the man in it. It also costars Bruce Campbell who is great in it!

I dont need Google to talk about Burn Notice!
