Interesting semantic difference =p

idk, being homeless in a park or other natural setting (provided you're not exposed to extreme temperatures, etc) can be a lifestyle choice, like that guy who lived 30 years without talking to another human being in that one park (until he got arrested). Kinda the same for people who choose to live out of a converted van or something where the amenities can be found externally, as opposed to areas where that wouldn't be an option.

I mean, you can make it work, but it's usually not an optimal way of life, especially in a pandemic etc. I would say if your homeless it's usually a problem excluding only a very few cases where it's by choice. I have a friend living out of a van for instance, mostly by choice and he makes it work, but it's certainly a problem (which he overcomes) dealing with many things someone with a home/place they rent etc don't have to worry about.

I also really wouldn't consider living in a van being homeless, as your just living in a literal mobile home (and very small one at that ). I you are living on the streets, and have no roof over your head (even a car/van roof), that is almost always a problem. In some places with the best weather, it's not as bad, but it still isn't great.

Somewhat, I guess. There aren't many in my area but you could make the argument that one homeless person is one too many.

There are very, very few other people where I live.

I have seen a number of homeless people in Lincoln. I don't think I've seen any in Omaha, though I have seen quite a few panhandlers.

Yeah. We have a quite a few. I saw a bunch while working at the bus station. There was one person who they called the cops on once. And there was a mother person who use to go through the trash cans before they were taken away to check and see what was in them. They were nice, though...

What really is an optimal way of life, though? I often find myself working an insane amount of hours to cover absurd taxes and generally-overpriced expenses while still ensuring I'm building up money to cover me if things ever take a turn for the worse. Sure, when it's not a pandemic where I'm furloughed I'm successful by every objective measure, but is that really an optimal life? Meanwhile I've been watching tiny home videos and noticing that many of them can fully support themselves (and I mean actually support themselves, not taking government handouts) while working relatively few hours and often living in gorgeous surroundings. Then you have the digital nomad movement where "homelessness" consists of them traveling heavily wherever they want while working fewer than 30 hours a week (a concept that seems insane).

And, like I've said in the past, I have a cousin who's technically homeless. He's making close to $100k this year, but his permanent address is a PO box and he hops between airbnbs every month (because it's cheaper than him just getting an apartment and he hasn't decided on a house). Meanwhile you have the lower middle-class who have homes, but constantly worry whether they'll make enough each month to pay the bills. Who's better off in that scenario? (Overlooking that my cousin works crazy hours to make his money.)

especially in a pandemic etc

You might be better off homeless in a pandemic if you're camping somewhere. Less exposure to people.

Well, a van lacks the amenities of a mobile home. When I saw some van tiny home videos, at first I thought "Wow, that's kinda innovative and takes the idea a step further" and then realized that nothing there was sufficient. The conversion was really still just a van.

And while a van is a step up from a car and a car is better than just being on the streets (although a tent can be better than either one), you're kinda talking matters of degrees. Even those stupidly tiny apartments that you can hardly imagine people living in look great by comparison, since they have running water, bathroom facilities, more reliable heat, etc.

Yeah. It's a fucking nightmare with bums leaving garbage and needles around, shoplifting stuff... Every store basically has a security guard now to keep them away. They need to wall off a farm somewhere and just let them run free there and grow their own food and learn some skills and stuff.

As someone who was once homeless for like 3 years, I've realized that it's fairly hard to tell in my town if someone is homeless so I actually don't know how many homeless people there are.

No one figured out we were homeless tbh. Just hang out at the library (not uncommon anyway for many) and find a secluded place to sleep (surprisingly easy).

I guess it's been kind of a problem because the shelter had no room, but it's a pretty small shelter too. They literally were filling with people with jobs/taking them first and first applied first served. So working but homeless is an issue?

The problem is most are off their head on spice and don't want to help themselves.
