All I got to say that when some event or story permeate the zeitgeist so thoroughly that has become a pop culture statement it may have been a spoiler at one time it is no longer a spoiler. That would be claiming that saying "Nancy Drew will sole the crime" is not a spoiler the same as saying that mario can turn into a raccoon in SMB3 when it is depicted in the box art.

Nothing should be considered a spoiler after a sufficiently long enough period of discovery exist. And 20 damn years is long enough and anyone offended by that probably spends way to much time finding grammatical and spelling errors to win arguements.

The thing is things actually leave the zetigeist after a period of time as well. So it's unreasonable to assume somebody has knowledge of every work of fiction that predates them.

Although the tend to leave after a long loss of relevance. Look how long charlie Chaplin has been in it without saying a word or maybe gone with winds ending catch phrase.

Focusing in on the gone with wind. That phrase itself is a spoiler even though memed, quoted and shared since its inception. Why is that not regulated by the mods. Heck why isn't any movie quote?

Titanic is also and referencing spoilers in the film -- rather than just the disaster itself -- is obviously against the TOS. Likewise, it's fair to mention the outcome of WWII, but not spoilers concerning events specific to a movie.

And if you present these things as spoilers as a joke to flout the rules, you're pretty reasonably being modded for trolling even if it's more innocuous.

None of those are spoilers. First 2 - real world events. 3 - its a historical book. 4 - not a plot spoiler. SMB barely has a plot.

Plot spoilers never expire as many people in this thread have told you. If you posted the fate of characters in the movie Titanic or a WWII movie, that would be plot spoilers.

Honestly, I can't really sympathize with anyone who is salty about getting "spoiled". It's just a special kind of entitlement to expect nobody to talk about culturally significant stories for worry of "spoiling" your enjoyment.

If the game almost predates your own existence for example, it's definitely a red flag that you're taking it too far. For example, FF7 "spoilers" are surprisingly still a contentious debate despite the fact that the game is now older than many college graduates.

No, you will never experience FF7 the way it was experienced in 1997. Just as the way you will never be with that one crush back in high school or see Ludwig Van Beethoven perform live. You'll get over it, I'm sure.

at the end of the day, people come to gamefaqs to look up info for games, and nobody has enough free time to consume every single game that comes out for the rest of eternity (especially discounting ones from before we were born). stuff like "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" is before most of our times and it's generally considered a very worthwhile play/read; why do you need to spoil something like that? media does not become obsolete after two weeks, and this isn't like a speedrun forum where everyone is already expected to have either beaten the game or just not care to begin with

it's much better to have a too-strict spoiler policy with spoiler tags available than to have it too loose, because people have different qualifications of what kinds of spoilers they don't want to see. you have to consider things from other people's perspectives to the most reasonable degree; you can't qualify the severity of spoilers based solely on your sensibilities. it takes very little effort to respect spoilers, just slap anything questionable inside of spoiler tags

on the other hand, this babying kind of perpetuates the spoiler conflict. I think it's purely circular: people severely overestimate the impact spoilers will have on their enjoyment, because of how severe the regulations on spoiler warnings have become, therefore they are severely butthurt when they are spoiled.
I'm not about to spoil anyone but I encourage you to spoil yourself. It's freeing and it's the way forward for online discourse. There is no reason plot points should hinder your enjoyment so don't let it.
