You can upgrade the drive and use external storage still. Right now putting more than a TB on a console would pointlessly inflate the price. Most people wont use that much early on anyway.

Some of that is going to be swap space for the OS to use as backup memory, typically between 1 and 2 times the physical RAM in the system. Might also be caching space as well, but that doesn't make much sense since games don't run off disc anymore.

That's still a big chunk of space to reserve.

Sounds terrible. I feel like I won't be playing a ps5 for like two years from now. That's unusual for me.

Storage space is so weird. I get the switch from HDD to SSD means it's going to be several times more expensive for the same amount of space, but you'd think we'd have at least gotten it to the point where a 2TB SSD is fairly cheap. It feels like it just stagnates for a while and then suddenly average drive space doubles all at once.

SSD being the new craze means the price wont be dropping anytime soon unfortunately.

Supposedly game size will be drastically reduced with ssds. A lot of the bloat is copying and pasting resources multiple places on the drive so that you can get faster read times by putting it next to resources that will use it. With ssds you don't need to do that.

There's still really no incentive for games like CoD to shrink their size or anything though.

I do wish they got a proper 1TB drive in there. Would have got it around the 750GB mark I think.

Hopefully the expandable drives will be cheaper in a couple of years. Sorta like what happened to Switch SD cards.

supposedly the games'll be smaller due to less duplicate data in the install or whatever, but i remain skeptical

that doesn't seem like it's anywhere close to being enough storage

Which is a significant chunk of the games coming out for the next while so that's not exactly comforting!

Although I can see games that aren't out yet but that are still going to be cross-platform like Horizon: Forbidden West actually being optimized.

ps5 isn't a 1tb drive. it's 825. so you're losing to the os plus the hard drive size never counting the same as your os counts storage plus being reserved for any functionality or expansion of the os over time.

Keep the 4 or 5 games you are playing on the SSD and transfer the rest to a big external HDD. Rotate when needed. It is basically what PC gamers were doing for years, maybe a little less now that SSD prices have come down.
