Instead of asking what is the earliest thing you remember, how about what's the latest thing that occurred during your lifetime that was too early for you to remember?

I don't remember Nixon resigning or anything at all about the presidency of Gerald Ford, even though they occurred after I was born. I barely remember anything about Jimmy Carter, but I do clearly remember the 1980 presidential race between Carter and Reagan.

So you know how on the can it says "Coca-Cola Classic"? Well it used to be just "Coca-Cola". Then they discontinued that formula, and made a new formula called "New Coke" that everybody HATED. So they discontinued that, and brought back the original Coke and rebranded it.

Earliest thing in that list that I remember is Columbine. But I have no idea what some of the stuff after that even is (VH1?).

The problem for me is that, as I get older, I'm starting to forget the things I used to remember. 20 year old me might have remembered something that 40 year old me has forgotten.

That being said, my easy answer is that I don't really remember anything from the 70s. My earliest context as a kid was mostly "What cartoons am I watching?" (as a kid you really don't give a shit about popular bands or national politics or current events), and I think I can remember watching stuff from the 81/82 region of time. There's probably a few other things from around that window - I feel like my long-term memory always kicked in somewhere around age 3 (1980-ish) and after that I had a pretty strong near-photographic recall of stuff.

My pop culture awareness didn't really pick up video games until 1983 (ColecoVision/Atari 2600), popular music around 1984 (I started listening to the local Top 40 station on the radio) or so, and comic books in 1985 (when I got a box of 30 Marvel comics from that year for Christmas). I also remember seeing the Star Wars films in the cinema in 1983.

I have almost no memory I can definitively assign to the 70s, though. I lived in a house for two years (until 1979) that I have no memory of whatsoever, all of the toys I remember owning as a kid were from the 1980s, and so on.

I don't know. I remember hearing on the radio about the Eniwetak Atoll bomb tests, that was in 1951 so I would have been 5. I remember Truman being President. I remember hearing on the radio about our jet fighter victories over the Yalu river.
