this happens way less in 3 houses than in prior FE games

as for what to expect - a pretty good game! don't read any spoilers.

edit: since you've never played a FE game, "normal" difficulty might be fine, but it's pretty easy for a turn-based strategy game imo. Consider hard.

This is really important! As someone else said, even hard difficulty isn't too bad (although imo the first few chapters can be tough), so don't stress about min-maxing unless it's something that really gets your rocks off. Any build on any character will work just fine, some are just finer than others.

Moreso than any other FE, 3H gives you a lot of room to do whatever. You want to turn that bulky armor dude into a graceful flyer? Have at it. You think it'd be funny if that cute little girl became a ridiculous tank, bofuri style? You can make it happen, it just might not be "efficient."

I'd personally recommend Hard/Casual for a first run. The difficulty balance is pretty solid I think.

It happens as often as it did in FE6-13, which all used the exact same system that Three Houses does

I'll forever be scarred by the time I missed on a 100% chance to hit. Although I think it was FFTA. My luck is just that bad. I usually don't assume I'll hit unless it's 100% but even then I'm not completely without worry lol.

I highly doubt that actually happened. I've heard way too many stories about the evil lying RNG in games where the RNG is fully understood and can be proven with 100% certainty to not work in a way that could ever produce the result the person is complaining about

I would say to people playing this as their first FE to play previous entries first as even though I haven't played it yet, I know it's quite different from what came in the past and this may be the new direction moving forward

Most Fire Emblem games have some pretty serious differences from each other. The GBA games are pretty similar (Sacred Stones less so), the two DS games are pretty similar and FE1 and FE3 are pretty similar, beyond that the games tend to feel noticeably different. Three Houses is a bit more distinct than the rest but it's not some unique outlier and it still has the stuff that's common across the whole franchise

I agree with this, but i do think that 3h is a departure from the current day "standard" in the same way that awakening was a departure from what came before it.
