Do you think it's fair to cut employee wages and benefits for full time employees who work at home?

Dailymail has learned that Microsoft has now given employees to work from home PERMANENTLY even when offices reopen..but they will have to accept a PAY CUT if they choose to do so!!

CEO Satya Nadella have unveiled a "hybrid workplace" plan that allows employees greater flexibility on whether they return post covid in an office environment or not.

They can work from home for less than 50% of the working week or request permanent remote work

The vast majority now are working from home and the company said they will not reopen offices until at least January 2021.

It highlighted in the guidance that some roles within the company will require them to return back to the office such as access to hardware labs, data centres and in person training and will also allow them to relocate domestically or even internationally if their role allows

But choosing to work from home will also alter their pay AND benefits depending on its own geo-pay scale

While home office expenses will be covered, those who choose to move away to cover their own relocation expenses.

Microsoft spokesperson told Dailymail say their goal is to evolve with the way they work with intention guided by employee input, data and committment to support workstyles and business needs

Several of the world's largest tech companies have allowed employees to work home permanently once offices begin to reopen including Facebook and Google and Apple and Amazon

Some require physical presence of employees and those will have to show up but they hope this will allow others not to return in a fully enclosed office space as they value health and following local government guidance

The work from home option does not apply to large warehouse based workface such as hourly and contract workers as it only bases on professional employees in the main corporate headquarteres

Do you think it's fair to cut benefits and pay if employees choose to work from home?

It makes sense not to cover relocation costs (while many WFH employees will want to move somewhere cheaper now that they no longer have to be near the office, that's still their choice and not something work is requiring them to do, so their employer shouldn't be on the hook for it) and to deduct home office expenses from other benefits, but it doesn't seem reasonable to do anything more than that to their pay/benefits. Provided their quality of work hasn't declined as a result of working from home, they should be getting the same total compensation for it.

That said, there is actually a case to be made for paying people less if they move somewhere cheaper, since a large driving force behind the high salaries for people working at big tech companies is the inflated cost of living in Silicon Valley. If rent/mortages don't cost them as much, they can be paid less while maintaining the same (or even better) quality of life, hypothetically allowing the company to improve or discount its services/products without hurting their bottom line.

In practice, those savings will almost certainly end up in the pockets of executives and not benefit anyone, so such cuts should not be taken lying down, but the case can nonetheless be made.

What you get paid for at work isnt just about just the work you do when you have a salaried position like that. You contribute a lot more than just whatever you turn in on paper and you miss out on some of that at work. Its not like youre doing *quite* as mindless of tasks at that level.

Plus you wont be in the environment which makes people more competitive (both the city and the company), has a culture established and fostered by the company, and allows a more free exchange of ideas. The culture in San Francisco is different than say Kansas City. Just hang out at a coffee shop and see what the conversations are about. Who youre around bleeds into your personality.
