Yep. While I love Bill Burr, this episode last night was not good. Monologue had a weird energy to it. The bit about gay black men having two months in summer was really funny though

I've only seen the monologue, so I can't say anything about the show. But the crowd for SNL isn't going to react very well to Burr's humor. That's not his fault at all, it's their fault for not seeing what he was saying.

That's why I love when he's on Conan. The crowd gets it because they get him. Or they groan and he attacks them and then Conan/Andy cackle in delight and then the crowd comes around.

An SNL crowd won't do that.

That's due to the audience, not his material. Go watch his Conan interviews and see how awkward some of them are because the crowd isn't sure if it's "PC" to laugh. Seriously, they laughed harder at Kate Mckinnon's stupid bit on the weekend update than his monologue.

The one in Tennessee was awful because of that crowd being the opposite of the SNL crowd. They couldn't handle being the butt of his jokes and it showed.

Basically that white women should stop co-opting the woke movement as they were complicit in the horrible things white men were doing to people of color for centuries.

And how gay people get a better month for pride than black people get and they should do them back to back. And that gay black men get extra special attention for that span.

Bill Burr isn't mainstream and vice-versa. Him being on SNL at all even to promote a movie or something is mindboggling enough.

Dave Chappelle's appearance seems more like an anomaly than anything else now.

I disagree that its the crowd that made it weird. I didnt think it was his best set, stand up wise. His gimmick of railing on woke culture has gotten old to me, I guess.

What makes Conan crowd different than SNL?

This is going to sound elitist, which it is.

Conan fans have been with him for years and we have seen a ton of different comedic styles because Conan is great about getting diverse guests/comedians. So seeing Bill Burr and Elijah Wood have a full on talk about killing people is going to elicit laughs from the crowd, even if they are uncomfortable with it.

The SNL crowds are there to be entertained, not challenged, even if it's in a joking way.
I'm not bashing SNL the show at all. I don't think it's a garbage program at all, like some people think, and I think most of them are incredibly talented people (specifically Chris Redd).

But when I think of SNL fans, I think of my friends back home that will just share the political sketches or stuff that reinforces their political beliefs or their views of the world. There's nothing challenging about the comedy and they like that.

Every time there will be a segment where he goes on a rant and makes it awkward with his crappy delivery of the punchline and sometimes theres no punchline at all.

If the excuse youre making for him is blaming the crowd then youd have to blame almost every crowd hes performed for.

But Ive always enjoyed his stand up shows despite the awkward bits he does.

a lot of people who watch SNL don't have a good sense of humor. Burr is a genius, but some people would rather keep it family friendly.

Not saying he couldn't have done better, but people are clearly not judging his monologue for the humor quality but rather the content. They weren't gonna laugh no later what.

As a fan it wasn't very funny, but I'm not offended of course. To quote a Norm Macdonald-ism, "It's more of a comment really..."

While I agree with you that some of his fans are like that (and misogynistic/racist in their comments about the hilarious Nia)

This specific deal with this is the white people complaining ARE being too sensitive.
I mean when a a comedian tells white people to sit back and stop co-opting racial minorities plights and the response from those white people are "Can you believe what he said about women/gay people!?", it's kind of proving his point.

Bill Burr can make his wife-hating comedy all he wants and people are free to laugh at him. Maybe they identify with that which is their business.

There are also people who don't like his humor, and if you feel that disapproval is a judgment on you, then again, that's your business.

I mean we all know the reason we call edgy humor "edgy" is because it flirts along the literal edge between humorous and offensive, right?

Yeah, the monologue for me was mostly just tired. Nothing new, some of the points where he tried to get edgy were just cringeworthy

i get what he was trying to do but the execution was just not there at all

Im a fan of offensive comedyjeselnik is one of my favorites for example, and Ive been a fan of Bill Burrs stuff in the past

but a rich 50-something comedian starting his comedy set off complaining about cancel culture just aint it in 2020

watched the link, thought it was pretty great for being essentially a PG-rated Bill Burr set
the first couple lines of the white women bit didn't roll out smoothly for me, but the bit definitely landed well
also liked the Pride/Black History bit, I think they ought to switch it up so they have July and August, 2 long months back to back

anyway thx for the topic and the mononlogue link, I would have never known he hosted otherwise

But that is largely WHY people don't find him unfunny. Because they're fucking offended. I'm sure there are some who just don't find some of his stuff funny in a general sense, but largely it's the "I'm offended by everything crowd".
