Netflix used to be the trendsetter when it came to TV shows. Now it's falling behind.

The company keeps canceling its most unique, creative, and ambitious original shows before they hit their stride.

The streamer is failing to replicate the success of "Stranger Things," while brewing frustration and disappointment among subscribers, who fall in love with niche shows that get axed without warning.

Netflix won't release viewership numbers, but it's clear their strategy is prioritizing short-term quantity over long-term quality.

They canceled Mystery Science Theater 3000 and (the award winning) The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance but keep renewing Big Mouth for more seasons.

I might just cancel and switch to Disney+ after I finish Star Trek Enterprise.

well netflix actually starts losing money if their originals go past 4 seasons which is why its now company policy to end a show once it hits its fourth season

we dont know why they choose to cancel some shows early but a big problem is with the writers they hire who keep leaving their shows on cliffhangers even though the majority of netflix shows dont go past 1 season
if you write for netflix make sure your season feels complete and dont try to shoehorn plans for second season in the last minute when you have no guarantee you are going to get one

it's still a fun season, even though it ends on a pretty big cliffhanger

Tv writers don't care. They have always written cliff hangers for decades even though most new shows get canceled. Its just a job to them and they don't care if it pisses off the fans

I can relate. I'm reluctant to actually get into a series by Netflix because I'm worried it'll get cancelled and I'd waste my time.

This has been endemic to TV since it was still radio.

Only in the US I am pretty sure. It was founded as a partnership between several US tv networks

These diabolical something-or-others cancelled "I am not okay with this" after changing the comic ending and leaving off on a cliff-hanger.

Like bruh if you were just going to cancel it you might as well have kept the original ending.

Netflix is just lucky they were the first and people just stay subscribed out of habit. They will be able to stay afloat on their brand name for decades even if all the content they put out is mediocre or canceled after a season.

Okay sure but The Dark Crystal didn't get anywhere close to 4 seasons.

Well it's based on population after all.

sometimes its a gambit play to drum up interest to save a show. I think Alf and Sonic SatAM both tried to use cliffhangers to hook an audience and avoid cancellation. (Both failed lol)

Yes.
The lesson here is "go global, dammit" - it would be even better if the content wasn't geo-locked.
