i used to tip my mailman until I moved states, now theres community lock boxes for mail. I miss meeting up with my mailman to give him a buck or two

Where I live the garbage pickup is paid for by county contracts, and thus taxes.

And I have to go to the post office to pickup my mail because they don't deliver in town. Even though I can walk to both the post office and a mailbox they do deliver mail to.

Even if I thought about tipping either, I certainly wouldn't.

My dad was a garbageman. The secret is that the tips are in the garbage themselves. Wed occasionally make money turning in copper wire that he found, but more interestingly him and his partner once found a cash register in a bin that they busted open and found $1,000 in.

His crowning find was a mint-condition basketball in a glass case signed by all of the players on one of the 90s Chicago Bulls championship teams. Someone appraised it for us at ~$2,000, and this was like 15-20 years ago so presumably its worth more than that now.

P.S. Interesting tidbit garbageman is the 5th most dangerous job in America.

The cash register sounds stolen. The thieves likely couldn't break into it so they ditched the evidence in the trash.

That is a likely scenario. As for the basketball, we always assumed it must have been someone cleaning out a house who didnt follow basketball and thus didnt realize its significance.
