...large gatherings. Do you agree w/ the judge?

https://foxbaltimore.com/news/local/maryland-man-gets-1-year-in-prison-for-hosting-large-parties-during-covid-emergency-orders

WASHINGTON (WJLA) A Maryland man has been sentenced to a year behind bars after being found guilty of multiple counts of failure to comply with an emergency order.
The Charles County Sheriff's Office says 42-year-old Shawn Marshall Myers hosted a gathering of between 50 and 60 people on March 22 at his Hughesville home, in violation of Gov. Larry Hogan's prohibition on large gatherings of people that was in effect at the time.

"Myers was argumentative with officers but eventually agreed to disband his party," according to the county State's Attorney.

Less than a week later, though, on March 27, officers responded to his home again for another report of a party exceeding 50 people.

"Officers told Myers to disband the party, but again he was argumentative claiming he and his guests had the right to congregate," the State's Attorney says. "Beyond being argumentative, Myers directed his guests to stay in defiance of Governor Hogans Orders and the officers lawful orders to disband the party."
This time, he was arrested.

On Friday, after a bench trial before District Court Judge W. Louis Hennessy, Myers was convicted of two counts of Failure to Comply with an Emergency Order and sentenced to a year of active incarceration to be served at the Charles County Detention Center. Upon release, Myers will be on unsupervised probation for a period of three years.

Yea, thats not going to work.

Either, pay people to stay at home so that they don't go broke. Or let them live their lives.

Forcing people to dwindle their savings via militaristic action is not going to work. American's will rebel.

They gave americans a one time payment of 1,200 dollars 6 months ago. That's like 6 dollars a day. If they are going to close the country by force, then you can't demand people not seek employment, and still pay their rent & utilities...and purchase food.

If you are going to keep people from earning an income, and force them by force to obey the order, then people are going to revolt.

You just proved your own point wrong. He hosted a party twice with 50 to 60 people. Do you know how much it costs to feed and provide beer and whatnot for two parties of that many people? Play the tiny violin elsewhere, this man was not struggling financially and suffering so much that he had to blow that much money on parties. Fuck him.

If you are going to keep people from earning an income, and force them by force to obey the order, then people are going to revolt.

For Example:
In this order from Boulder, CO "you are not allowed to go to work unless failure to do so would result in your inability to earn enough income to pay your rent"

So you are supposed to call the number and provide proof that you don't have enough money to pay your rent or purchase food unless you receive a steady paycheck? Which means that if you have worked hard to create a savings account, retirement fund, or you have assets that could be liquidated...you aren't allowed to go to work. You are just forced to bleed yourself dry?

Here is a thought...either let people earn an income, or provide them w/ enough of a monthly stimulus that they can pay rent and purchase supplies without ruining their futures.

It has nothing to do with it. This man probably sat on unemployment after making $300 from his old job, collected that nice $600 weekly bonus for months on top of the benefits, and made a lot more than he should have, and pissed it away on an effort to further spread the virus like a moron. Did you see his pic? That doesn't scream brainchild to me.

Why? So long as the sentence falls within sentencing guidelines for the specific crime, it's not really a morality issue, it's an administrative issue and in this instance it seems just (it's a potential public safety hazard that also flies in the face of a statewide executive order).

I can see this getting appealed enough to make for an interesting SCOTUS case.

Also the punishment is pretty excessive considering people can pack like sardines in the street and protest. I don't give a fuck if it's outside, you can't convince me covid isn't spreading with people that close.

This is excessive, but he should be punished for it - a year in prison though? That is apparently equal to burglary, theft of $25,000 - $100,000, and second degree assault...

Also, were prisons not emptied of non-violent offenders to limit the spread of Covid in prisons? Is sentencing people to jail time for violating Covid restrictions a violation of Covid restrictions?

A year of prison isn't a fitting punishment. A fine, community service, required supervision, those seem appropriate. Now the taxpayer's are going to be footing the bill for his stay and he'll likely be unemployable when he gets out. Americans are way too trigger happy with sending people to jail.

He broke the law once and he got a slap on the wrist.

Then he broke the law a second time one week later for the same exact issue... and lets not forget this tidbit:

"Officers told Myers to disband the party, but again he was argumentative claiming he and his guests had the right to congregate," the State's Attorney says. "Beyond being argumentative, Myers directed his guests to stay in defiance of Governor Hogans Orders and the officers lawful orders to disband the party."
This time, he was arrested.

An example needed to be made.
