Covid does kill - but in general, only a small population is actually killed by it. The problem is the spread - which a party does nothing but increase. It is very likely that those involved may get sick, but the majority of them will survive - as long as if they have symptoms (or were in contact with someone that did) they isolate, they should be okay. Asymptomatic spread is apparently rare, however, pre-symptomatic spread is far more misunderstood.

Drunk driving is a totally different thing. Yes, fewer people are killed overall (120,000 in 2019), but the percent of drunk driving causing death compared to regular traffic collisions is 25% to 50% depending on region. In terms of comparison, gun related deaths typically average 30,000 per year.

Covid, on the other hand, based on the limited data we have of confirmed cases to deaths, is 3%.

Tying this all back together, the drunk driving charge in Maryland is a $500 fine and 2 months in prison for a first offense; up to $5000 and 5 years.

Why is hosting a party a harsher crime than drunk driving?

This is extremely disproportionate and we can't get a handle on it as we are still averaging 1000 deaths a day from this.

Furthermore, about 10,000 in the US are killed by drunk drivers per year.

In less than 8 months, 206,000 have been killed by Covid-19.

When it comes to drunk driving victims, you can generally apprehend the perpetrator. When it comes to Covid-19, you generally cannot.

There were 38,000 car fatalities in the US last year total, closer to 10,000 were alcohol related. The virus has taken over 200,000 lives. People that are saying they consented to go, and knew the risk, did their families consent also? And all the people that they would then spread it to, did they consent also? Everyone always talks about the individual, and never considers everyone else. Even if 10 people of 50 get it, in a week those 10 people can spread it to 10 more people, and now it's 100, 90 that had nothing to do with that party. If one dies from that as a result, is it worth having a party and a mass gathering during a pandemic? No it fucking isn't.
