Made a comment on reddit that skateboarding isn't any more difficult for females than males.

"women, not females"

Most that I've seen are pre/teens, so no, they're not women.

"then say girls or ladies because female is a slur"

This was said by multiple people not just one moron, is this true nowadays in this overly PC world? Wouldn't "girls" be more condescending when discussing females over 16 or so?

Am I really that out of touch? I haven't seen CE rant about it so it can't be that bad...

That was my first thought as well, but considering the sub I don't think that's fully the case. One is a troll for sure, but this is 3 or 4 people.

I don't really know why it is a slur but it is associated with neckbeard fedora types of people for whatever reason

it's not a slur, obviously. but plenty of shitty people have been using it over the last few years in a way that clearly shows their sexism, and its use is definitely starting to throw up flags.

Tbqh I see it more in macho types, where it sounds like they're talking about women as though they are cattle or something

You see, the word contains the word male, which indirectly means that males are better than women.

Yeah I have seen that too. I dont think it goes as far as being a slur but I have seen enough people use it in a way to mean less than male.

It's not a slur and anyone that says it is, is ridiculous and not worth engaging...

If you argument is that certain types of people used that word in an offensive ways, sure I can see that, but that can be said about LOTS of different words.

As long as you are using it to describe the opposite sex and not in an offensive way, there is absolutely no problem with that word.

People that take offense to that word when used in the proper context are simply hyper sensitive babies...

The word "female" has been used derogatorily towards women for a long time. As a cultural example, see the ferengi on DS9. Context matters.

If you use the term man and then female (instead of woman) in the same sentence that is weird, it's still not a slur, but it's weird.

However if you already used the term male and then used the term female in the same sentence, nothing is wrong with that...

This. And likewise, people who only use males to refer to guys kind of sound like they dont like men. In any case, it just sounds stuffy.

This is my concern...

If you are using the word contextually right and have no weird connotations to it, than it shouldn't be considered weird or offensive in any way...

On the other hand if you say something like "Look at those men and females playing football," well that is fucking weird in that context.

Connotations change based on how the word is used...

You shouldn't instantly go to "bad connotations" if the word was not used in any weird or unusual way.

Using "females" outside of scientific discussion is weird, point blank. It's a scientific term and it comes off as reductive when trying to use it informally.

"Look at those males and females playing football" is a weird ass thing to say
I mean sure, I wouldn't say that, I would say look at those men and women playing football.

I am just saying there is nothing wrong with the word if it isn't being used in a negative way and to associate "bad connotations" with said word in such a situation is stupid.

go look at the history of the word "queer" to see how easy it is for a neutral word to turn negative, and how hard it is to change back afterward.

You mean a slang term for a gay person, as opposed to a scientific word representing the two sexes?
