Almost as dumb as the spelling of "dumb".

The word Miserable is strange.

Some people so indeed say Miz-er-a-able

But between the East and the West, the shorthand is either Miz-ra-bull or Miz-er-bull...

Most unique of all is the Deep South, who say "Miz-earl"... get the catfish out of your mouth and enunciate!

Well, it comes from the same people that brought you "oiseaux" (pronounced "wah-zoh"), so...

"Gaol" is a horrible word. It's pronounced "jail", but it looks like it should be "gah-ool" or something.

The people to blame for "people" having an o is the Latin-loving lummoxes who standardized English spelling. In Middle English, it was spelled "peeple" or "peple", but because "populus" had an o in it, so too must "people".

Part of the problem there is speed of pronunciation.

It's possible to slur syllables together. So someone who is saying miz-err-ah-bull can slur the middle two together so it sounds like rah or err instead. But if you asked them to clearly and slowly enunciate they might easily break it back into two parts again.

To be fair, though, "people" should have an "o" in it, because the root of the word does come from populus.

If anything, what it shouldn't have is an "e". That was just a bit of a fuck up that got added in by the French and which got passed on into English, but which never should have been there in the first place. If we're going to be pompous lingustic snobs you can't really take the side of the vulgate fuckup over the actual antecedent.

Also, we should all probably be speaking pre-proto-Indo-European right now, because literally everything other language humans have ever spoken is just a corruption of a previous language. NOTHING is "pure".

Sure you can. The former evolved naturally, the latter had been lost to that evolution and was later forced back in for the sake of being "proper." It was an artificial change that went against established pronunciations and phonetic rules for no other reason than to make a half-assed return to an antecedent nobody cared about.
