Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

Jack Jack. Definitely a scenario where Cloud wouldn't want to fight a baby, then that baby would punch him across the planet

Cloud isn't someone who'll be thrilled to fight a baby, and Jack-Jack doesn't really go all out fighting people unless they're messing with him. I guess Cloud is probably more likely to set him off and get wrecked than to be able to lull him to sleep or something, but I dunno.

actually does Cloud have a sleep spell he's able to use, or a materia or something? I could see him going for that

Cloud does have a sleep materia. I wouldn't consider it part of his normal materia setup (based on me never using it, your mileage may vary), but I would consider it in his inventory and he can swap to it if he has a moment.

I'd imagine he would have time after seeing his opponent to think 'uh no, not fighting a baby' and bring out the sleep materia, Jack-Jack won't exactly be thirsting for his blood right out the gate

leaning Cloud right now but would like some second opinions

Does this sleep materia thing exist outside of game mechanics? I'm always a bit skeptical of JRPG skills that aren't ever used except during in-game battles where everything seems exaggerated.

Cloud either via sleep or in an actual fight. Cloud duked it out with stuff like Sin Bahamut and the Remake stuff. I think he could take Jack-Jack in a straight up fight if it came down to it but yeah sleep seems like it'd do the trick.

Nope. I personally think it counts since it's not contradicted by any element of plot, but it's never used in a cutscene or anything.

How effective is it? Beccause if it's like a 1-turn sleep spell or something I can't imagine him winning the fight with it

I don't remember how it works in FF7 specifically. Generally it's more than one turn, but in some games, being hit makes you wake up. The spell can also miss.

Cloud has an invulnerability spell and petrification, just to name two options. There's no reason he loses this unless he fucks up.
