Everyone knows who they are going to vote for by a large majority. If they were going to vote mostly Republican, a Republican would pay that.

I still feel weird about other conservatives being against stuff like this. Here my attitude is that I don't like the idea of the government being powerful enough to strip rights from the citizenry, be that voting rights or assembly rights or speech rights or gun rights, etc. I don't reconcile being in favor of small government with said government being in a position to do something like this and blocking masses of Americans from voting.

Again, missing the point entirely. These are people out of prison and supposedly rehabilitated. Yes, if you're a free citizen you should have the rights of other free citizens. If you then break the law you face legal consequences, but expanding said consequences to cover not being allowed to vote or to carry out other constitutional rights once out of prison is downright inane. That's nothing more than big government at its worst.

And small government conservatism =\= anarchy.
