After you defeat him, Wiggler invites you to come back and visit any time. That got me thinking and now I want a game set in this same rendition of Peach's castle in which you revisit all the painting worlds, and there's no Bowser terrorizing everyone but each painting has its own subplot thing going on. With more fleshed out friendly NPCs.

From the bedroom onward, the Galaxy levels are really really good imho

I just now finished 120 starring 64. Started with it, just beating it, and finished with it upon completion. That was a fun trip down memory lane. I've now 100%ed all three games, yay. Well, not counting the Luigi run of Galaxy. I love that game enough I won't be surprised if I do a Luigi playthrough in the next couple months.

but man I want to play Galaxy 2 again bad with pretty resolution

Just did 120 shines in Sunshine, boy you really don't get much for that huh. Like sure getting 99 lives in 64 is pointless but at least you get to see Yoshi and get a nice little message. And it's way less annoying getting 120 stars in 64.

I guess I'll move on to playing Galaxy for the first time soon.

you can't open the cannon without the top level of water though.

This isn't accurate by the way. I know, I already chimed in on this before by mentioning Toad tells you about jumping high into the painting. I refrained from saying anything else at the time because I hadn't reached WDW yet myself in this playthrough and I don't have specific memories of the worlds beyond the main floor.

But anyway. Yeah if you just raise the water to the highest point that can be done via the little pyramid switch things, you can then go over to where the Bob-omb Buddy is and jump right up to him from the floating platform.

120 get

Man, what a fantastic video game. It's wild how despite it being made in 1996 and (basically) the very first of its kind, it's still just flat out fun to play. Like, the fact that just aimlessly running and jumping around the world feels good is a testament to how much of a home run it truly was in its day.

It's not perfect but damn. If you have to point to like, a few very specific stars or areas where the camera is annoying just to be able to bash it, that's pretty amazing given all the other context.

Man I almost wanted this fixed even more than the insufferable camera. Sunshine (and onward) by contrast is so tight. Mario actually moves where I want him to move on small platforms and narrow ledges and isn't crippled by slopes the true villain in SM64 and inevitably sent to his death.

It's like comparing SMB 1 physics to SMB 3.

Hmmm. They both feel great to control in wide open areas, it's just tight spaces where you don't have much room to move that Mario turns on a dime in Sunshine. In 64 you have to tap gently a few times to get him to even turn around without falling off a ledge. Like, I feel like those FLUDD-less levels would be impossible with 64 physics. But yeah, different strokes.

I mean yeah in very tight spaces you have to be careful but like, you do adjust to it after you die a couple times right? Maybe it's difficult for me to fairly imagine since I first played the game when I was so young. But like. Even this playthrough in 2020, after not playing SM64 since...well, hell probably since the DS version came out, for the first 30-60 minutes I went through an adjustment period. But then I just knew how to handle Mario. I'm not defending the controls moreso I just feel like the criticisms are overly harsh considering what their content is. You get a feel for the pace and momentum and then it's fine.

I legitimately had no clue sunshine had so much voice acting. Kind of a wild experience for me in 2020 because 2002 feels like ancient history.

Impressions after 2 hours:

-story is so goofy, I enjoy it
-spin jump is fantastic I just want to do it over and over
-wish I could gain more height via hover, or at least gain height more quickly
-infinite belly sliding/hopping without ever using legs or arms is hilarious
-why do you insist on making me kill the same paint covered piranha plant a thousand times I don't get it
-aiming the spray feels a little...off. I don't know how else to say it. Like it's not quite perfectly calibrated with what I expect, or something
-the world feels pretty alive which is fun

Ahhh you already know about the spin jump. Don't think I knew about that at all on first playthrough, but this collection does have those helpful action guides! Some other movement mechanic advice:

- Spray some water then dive to go reaaaally fast. (Might be covered in the control guide also.) Best way to get around without -- or hell even with sometimes -- the turbo nozzle. And it's just fun.
- I almost never used the R aiming; it is bad. Instead click in the right control stick to go to an over the shoulder perspective. Aiming is infinitely better this way.
- You can also spin on the way down from a jump in midair to slow your descent, though I've found no practical use for this since the hover nozzle exists. But hey, maybe in the FLUDD-less levels.

Exactly.

When used for rotational (vice translational) input, forward/back correspond to rotation around the y-axis. Forward for down and back for up mimics the actual rotation one would use in the real world to achieve the desired effect.

When you are using your controller to control Marios movement, does pushing up cause him to take off and fly through the air, or does it cause him to walk/run forward?

I mean it's just a difference of 3D vs 2D, and how you conceptualize the task at hand (i.e. "tilt your head back" vs "make the crosshair go higher")

When you're moving a cursor on a menu with a list of options, it's obviously "up" and not "forward"

No new ground is going to be broken here haha

Except if you're playing a 2D game, forward and up would be reversed. Think of Smash. Forward air is attacking while pressing right on the control stick and up air is attacking while pressing up on the control stick. Using up, down, left, and right I'd wager is less confusing for most people no matter what. A control stick has directions just like a D-pad, and generally, you're looking down at a controller. But yeah, it's also obvious if you say "go forward" in a 3D game what direction you should push.

but uhh how did we get here and have you tried clicking IN the right stick to aim in Sunshine yet
