I want to defend SM64 here but it wouldn't be objective
I collected 120 stars at least 6 times and I feel like I am very used to the game

So I can't judge anyone that plays it for the first time in 2020...the issues that don't bother me now might be a deal-breaker for other, more novice players
I don't need to play with the camera too much because I know exactly where I need to go and what I need to do, sometimes even "ignore" a bad camera angle because I don't need to see what I am doing

But people that played it years ago and didn't like it? yeah this is some shit taste right there

Odyssey is my favorite by a lot so far still, but I still have a lot of Sunshine left, need to replay 64 and need to play 3D World when the port comes out

I hadn't played 64 since the DS version (not a good time) and it held up, still a great game.

The camera is definitely bad sometimes though, but I guess they did what they could without a second analog stick.

The people saying "the camera sucked then!" are definitely being unfair as the technology to have the kind of camera system we have now didn't exist in 1996.

I played through all of Super Mario 64 this weekend, I actually beat it for the first time (I had gotten to the last Bowser fight as a kid but never actually won). the level design is still great, the visuals and sound hold up surprisingly well. I had a great time playing it. However, I definitely had camera problems in the later levels. In the ones that are more wide open (which to be fair, is most of them) it's not really a problem but when you get to the precision platforming of the last two courses in particular it gets a bit annoying.

I have touched Sunshine as well, and I think to play it feels slightly better than 64 purely because of the camera. With that said, we do need to cut 64 some slack because of its time, and the design is much better. A lot of the frustrations in Sunshine come from the design not technological limitations of the time.

All in all, I think with Galaxy the 3D Mario games took a flying leap forward and never looked back. Preliminary ranking:

Odyssey>Galaxy 2>Galaxy>3D World>>>3D Land>64>Sunshine

Though bear in mind, they are all really good games and those top four are all all-time greats.

Oh yeah I can never defend the camera in SM64
And of course this aged like shit, we are used to being able to have a 360 camera with a mouse/analog stick, so that camera sucked us
I'll be honest when I tried it on the Switch I moved the right analog stick to "rotate the camera" and expected it to move like in today 3D games, and then it did the "whooep" sound and move 90 degrees and I was like "oh..right.."

This is driving me nuts and I cant find an answer anywhere. I am in Bianco Hills. I have completed all 8 chapters. I have found all 30 blue coins. I have collected 100 regular coins. I have done both Secret shines and yet at the Bianco Hills selection theres a ??? with 2 shines next to it like its a double shine or something. I cannot figure out what it is. As far as all my searching has told me the area only has 11 shines and nothing else. Anybody know what it is?

Yeah I played about an hour total of SM64 and Sunshine but I'm not feeling a strong desire to return to either. I'll probably go back and try SM64 again out of guilt eventually but I doubt I'm going to have a good time.

This is the worst shine in the game. Getting Yoshi over to the island takes forever, and you have to do it every time you game over the level. Then the level is way harder than it should be given the difficulty of bringing Yoshi over. I don't know what they were thinking with this one.

Yeah lots of specific stuff in Sunshine is pretty awful, which is a shame because I think the central mechanics are fantastic. They could have built a really good game on top of it but then you get a whole level in a Hotel that doesn't let you jump around and a plethora of other strange design choices.

Oof I beat Mario 64 in a day and it really has aged poorly. It will forever be a landmark game and a watershed moment for the industry, but its simplicity, horrible camera, and bad precision platforming really stood out on this last playthrough. Funny enough, I think the pure platforming stages (the Bowser levels) are all great and hold up okay, but it's the extra precise jumps you have to make onto tiny platforms in some regular level stars that just isn't good game design. The secrets inside the pyramid star has a particularly awful example of this...compounded further by the camera.

Haven't touched Sunshine yet but I'll probably become one of those Sunshine > 64 heathens at this rate.

The good news is that Mario Galaxy has been a magical delight yet again and is somehow as great as it's ever been. That masterpiece has aged like fine wine.
