It's a straight emulation with widescreen support; there are no engine-level tweaks. To my understanding Sunshine doesn't even run at a higher framerate than it did on GameCube.

So it's potentially worse, but with polished surface-level appearances? Excuse me while I take this car wax to a broken-down vehicle...

Edit: On second thought that works for the Regalia in FFXV, so... I dunno.

Mind you this is the company that sold a Super Mario All-Stars ROM on a disc and tried to convince everyone it was an anniversary gift for $30.

You can inject a better SMAS ROM into your Wii's VC than what Nintendo tried to peddle.

But anyway, back to SM3DAS.

I never paid for the other two, actually I never even played Galaxy at all. So its not like Id be giving them extra money. Its like buying them if theyre new again and went on sale.

Considering a CIB Mario 64 can go for $80 or more, Id say the game isnt a bad purchase at all.

I've heard this a lot tbh.
I've also heard that in at least some of those cases they literally no longer had the games.

But ROM sites totally aren't preserving old games, right?

Generally speaking, whenever a game comes out that I find objectionable on a content level or business practice level, I simply don't buy it at all.

I honestly don't think "I don't care, I'm still gonna get it" has ever been part of my mindset. Either a games flaws aren't things that bother me in any meaningful way, or they bother me enough to guarantee I will never spend money on that game, period.

Then guess which of those two options I'm going to choose?

Though in this case, it's kind of a meaningless question, since think all the 3D Mario games are shit anyway, and I have zero desire to ever own a Switch. So there was pretty much no chance I was ever going to buy it under any terms or conditions anyway, short of Nintendo offering to pay ME to buy it, or if the game came with a free blowjob from a supermodel or something.

But I've stopped playing other franchises I used to love over petty bullshit or poor directorial choices, so it's not as if I'm incapable of putting my foot down over things I consider dealbreaker issues. I'm an adult with enough impulse control that I don't feel compelled to rush out and stick my dick in a blender every time some company greases the wheels of the hype machine hard enough.

The lack of Galaxy 2 puzzles me, but I'm still getting it. It'll be nice to be able to play them without hooking up a different system, and $20 apiece is hardly a bad price (though the fact that SM64 has been sold for $10 means it's probably more like 10/20/30, but that's beside the point). Realistically, the fact that it's a limited print run means it's going to sell out regardless of what I do, so abstaining wouldn't send any message at all.

Not on the Switch. The Switch's classic game offerings are locked behind that paywall.

I think that falls apart at the "stubborn insistence on going forward," section. People eat junky fast food because it's convenient and relatively quick. I find it fairly reasonable to think it'd be easy to talk someone out of eating fast food if you could present an alternative that has the same relative quickness without the "junky fast food" component. No one would steadfastly insist on going to a Burger King unless they had a specific craving for it, which wouldn't be stubborn in that case (it's justifiable to them).

I'd argue that simply grabbing your ankles every time a developer or publisher wants to fuck you in the ass does far more to foster that as a reality.

Remember, every time someone does something terrible and it sells well, other people will do the same. Then it will be normalized. Then it will become the standard. And ultimately you're left with an industry full of hot garbage while the older gamers who rant about how extra content used to come free in games in a time before DLC and lootboxes and season passes and always on requirements and mandatory separate accounts and so on come across sounding like the lone madmen.

The sort of people who go "Well, at least these microtransactions are only cosmetic!" are the prime example of people who've been beaten down so long they now crave their master's whip.

When a publisher gets praised for being slightly less shitty, something has failed.

That's probably more a function of how the human brain works. Multiple studies have kind of shown that, given the choice between "cheap and convenient" and "quality", people will chose the cheap and easy option 100% of the time.

It's why stores like Wal-Mart prosper (and why people tend to ignore the long-term consequences of supporting stores like Wal-Mart).

Basically, we eat fast food as a culture because it's fast, it's easy, and it's cheaper than healthier prepared food alternatives.

It also tends to be heavy in sugars in fats, so we get the short-term high that kicks in addictive behavior in our lizard brains, even if we're aware of the long-term effects it can have on our health. That's "Tomorrow Me"'s problem, not mine (which is another psychological phenomenon that studies have been done on, which kind of underlines why we tend to be so shit at sacrificing short-term gratification for long-term benefit - humans literally process the idea of their future selves as if it was an entirely different person. We tend to process "Future Me" the same way we process "Bob, the guy who lives next door").

Yeah. I like being able to play them all on the same system. And on the go (though, that was also possible with the DS version of 64, which is better because of the extra characters and mini games)...

The collection's availability is time-limited both physically and, inexplicably, digitally to March 31, 2021 and, compared to something like Crash Bandicoot: N.Sane Trilogy, has zero work done to improve the games in any meaningful way, just being straight emulations with support for a widescreen display despite being a full-priced game (something NST was not).

It's the epitome of "They'll buy it if the right name is on the box," laziness and cynicism.

That is indeed a pretty questionable move. I get not producing all that many physical, since it's being released to celebrate a single event and probably isn't going to have enough long-term popularity to warrant continuing production, but removing it from the digital store is just weird. Presumably, it's so they can release it again for the 40th anniversary and capitalize on hype from people who missed it the first time around.

That said, if I end up deciding that it's not actually worth owning, I've got a physical copy preordered, so I'll have the option of reselling it and probably making a profit due to the limited supply. That's kind of nice to know.
