At first I was laughing at conservatives regarding this, however after having seen some clips from this movie, I do think it clearly went too far regardless of what message it was trying to convey.

they could have gotten their message across without crotch shots of the 11 year old girls and the scene where they do a sexy routine to escape two creepy security guards.

the message isnt the problem - its how they are conveying the message.

and my niece does dance and what they have them do I see as a problem but it isnt as intense as what the movie is portraying.

and I am also against kid pageants and that stuff. South Park did a crude episode involving that as well that given its reputation hyperbolized it well.

and on the subject of canceling Netflix, its dumb and its one of the many things I dislike about society over the past few years. Cancel culture is fucking stupid and has no place in society over petty things.

if they didn't do the "crotch shots", then people wouldn't be talking about the movie. again, they could not have accomplished their goal without taking this particular approach. this is the intended outcome.

This is a French movie, I can't imagine the purpose of the film was to get nervous Americans to clutch their pearls in outrage. I doubt that the French reaction to the film was anywhere near this nutty.

this post almost makes it sound like you think this is an issue of cultural difference. And if so the issue isnt that we arent tolerant of French culture but rather French culture should probably take a look in the mirror if its ok to objectify children this way.

kids been doing this to themselves every day for years but never seen it talked about on these forums before
so maybe this movie is a good thing if it gets used to talk and do something about it

but so far people care more about the movie putting the spotlight on it than the issue itself

None of them have really generated the buzz that this movie did. Hell you'll still find people saying they thought American Beauty was a great movie.

The history of the shit that's gone under the radar suggests otherwise. The "pedogate" YouTube controversy had been going on for fucking years until a somewhat popular youtuber did a video about it and it went viral. People either didn't notice or didn't care. It wasn't until r/jailbait made public broadcast news that Reddit decided to ban it (Cuties is literally r/jailbait: the movie btw).

This one however pretty much drew attention immediately. Enough attention that you can probably take it off netflix right now and mission is still accomplished. I haven't watched it and won't be sad to see it go. Because I'd rather argue about the reality of it and not a fictional story designed to kick the hornet's nest.

However, these were composite shots, so the girls werent dancing like that all the time, the director continued. We also worked with a child psychologist throughout the filming. Shes still working with the children, because I want to make sure that they can navigate this newfound stardom.

All we know suggests that their parents were involved along with a child psychologist at all times. There's definitely issues with it but "they might be getting raped behind the scenes" isn't one of them.

That is why I said "not that this should've even be done in the first place" specifically.

It's a fine line to say what is or isn't right in that regard though, and not a discussion I really want to have. You'd have to ask the questions 'if a person looks young, are they unable to choose what to do with their body' or 'they look young and it's borderline jailbait porn', and it's just...way too complicated to answer, and not the discussion we're even having.

I was saying an alternative that would be far, far, a million times far more acceptable. And, even in that case, it's a fine line.

I just think we need to accept that this particular thing is absolutely unacceptable.
