I'm only 12 minutes in. Some bitch has "chi" which she can use to shape shift into people and even animals. But Mushu was too unbelievable?

It wasnt that Mushu was unbelievable, its that he was the only part of the original film that critics were hard on. Obviously the talking heads at Disney dont want a repeat of that.

Mushu took the focus away from Mulan and might've stepped on a few tails here and there. (He wasn't popular in China.) Mulan purported itself to be the first Disney adventure with a female lead, but it really was an Eddie Murphy vehicle first and foremost.

I get the disappointment, but it really is for the best that Mulan be allowed to star in her own movie.

Such a terrible movie. You can see that it is high budget but overall it was pretty garbage. And tbh, fuck Disney for filming in Xinjiang.

The acting was awful and the movie felt lifeless. It's like someone at Disney took a DVD copy of the animated Mulan and sucked the soul and fun out of it.

I knew it had little going for it 2 minutes in. A 6 year old doing insane wire-fu is exactly what Mulan fans wanted. They obviously didn't want a story about a young woman's dedication and training which led her to grow into the hero of China. Good job, Disney.
Sad thing is that this is just below Jungle Book in the remake pile. The only one that managed to add to the story while still having a firm grasp on its themes and characters.

I havent seen it yet but is she really an expert fighter from the get go?

i dont know the myth the Disney original is based on but like you said her discipline and training were some of the best parts of the film. Even at the end she wasnt an expert fighter she just had heart and was a quick thinker.

She's still a quick thinker. That scene where she used the fireworks to cause an avalanche in the original has been altered and is now even better IMO. But the first few minutes of the movie are literally about showing how she's this amazing and skilled warrior while she's barely out of diapers.
The whole training she went through in the original in order for her to grow along with the other recruits has been replaced with her holding back during training and hiding how she's the best warrior ever.
