Here is the deal housing should be a human right. The housing market in the US is in complete shambles and overrun by big investment companies who bought up everyone's fore-closed houses from the banks after the financial crisis. They were able to get them for cheap and are now renting them out essentially leeching money from society.

Rental prices drive property values which drive property tax assessments not the other way around. So when landlords try to say oh but we HAVE to raise rents because PROPERTY TAX is so high they are completely full of s*** because if they stopped raising rents, property tax would remain low.

If you have an apartment building, the value of this building is based on expected future rents. If rents continue skyrocketing, your apartment becomes more valuable because you can expect to collect more in rent. And then if your property is more valuable your property tax assessment goes up since it's based on how much your property is valued.

The most hilarious part is capitalism was never intended to have landlords around. It's been qualified as rent-seeking and parasitic since Adam Smith, and continues to be accurately viewed as corrosive to the economy by economists today. When even capitalist cheerleaders are calling your s*** exploitative, it says something.

What youre missing with these attempted gotchas is that it takes labor to produce food, clothing, etc. That labor should be compensated.

I was born and raised lower class, there's no such thing as a "non-scummy" landlord in that class bracket, and I doubt they get much nicer the higher you go.

Hell, I've been homeless for two years now, the kind of people in this profession will literally throw you into a gutter and spit on you.

I've looked into the idea that housing is a human right. It's not entirely unfounded.

But I feel like by that metric, electricity and possibly Internet and cellular service also qualify in this modern world and those cost money too.

Residential landlords have a lot of influence over people's lives so it's easy to imagine why people dislike them. You notice how no one ever gets mad at the guy who owns a strip mall? Even communists who theoretically dislike that just as much aren't focusing on that

Well that's what communisum is in theory. Everyone works for the state and everyone is provided for by the state.

But it suffers from "Equality for all, but I'm more equal than everyone else," at the top.

It depends on the specific circumstance of an individual situation, but I didn't think I needed to specifically note the continual upkeep cost of homes compared to other goods. Unlike food and clothing, there isn't really a point where it stops taking money to "produce housing" even when the house has already been built and the initial construction costs paid.

I think the profit motive thing is basically a red herring in the housing conversation imi. Housing and land is inherently rivalrous, and I don't see evidence of very good provision of government housing in any country (capitalist or communist). Individualized subsidies are the way to go, and we do that in the US, but like all of our social policies it mainly benefits the 'already haves' instead of the 'have nots' because we like to use tax breaks to do things instead of directly spending money
