Which makes it fucking baffling that Disney deliberately marketed it as a remake and includes numerous references to the original film. I'd change the depiction of the Huns in the original (but not Shan-yu, I think he's the perfect antagonist for the narrative and I wouldn't change him at all). I'm not saying the movie has to do a "both sides" thing or make them justified/sympathetic, but toning down the dehumanization a bit would make the film less... dated. Keep Mushu, just change his species. Remove the cricket. Theres a gag involving a panda that was dumb, cut it. The ancestor scenes ought to be completely cut. The emperor shouldn't have bowed to her and she should not have touched him; it kinda undermined his mystique/impact, imo. One thing I'm iffy about... Chi Fu doesn't need to be more likeable per se, but I'd consider trying to make him less of a caricature. Edit: nah, changed my mind. I think it's good for the narrative if he stays the way he is. The cuts would give more time that could be devoted to fleshing out other elements more... I think that's it. Ftr, Mulan's my favorite Disney film.
