I read the full article already. The part where the prof pauses the zoom session is questionable but note it's coming from the students. I'd like to hear the view or defense from the professor himself.

And FYI I'm chinese myself so I can see how ludicrous this sounds. NOT the blacks claiming the professor said it on purpose but I know it's very much possible for most white people to pronounce Chinese syllables wrongly especially without the 'han yi pin ying' that many tend to neglect. The professor doesn't look like a Chinese professional, so no surprise if he did it by accident.

Again point in topic...I'm more appalled a bunch of blacks found this offensive.

yeah, I'm sure the people that complained suffered a traumatic PTSD from hearing a professor incidentally mispronounce two Chinese words.

Yes there is both a "ne-ga" meaning that and "na-ge" meaning which one. The problem was that the professor didn't specify context in the meaning of the words and thus people took it the wrong way.

The professor was specially using the word for an example demonstration in filler words. Nowhere did he ever mention or suggest anything to do with some racist remark or whatever.

There's a crap ton of English words that can be mistaken for vulgar in other foreign languages. For example the word 'mother' can mean 'ma de', which is an extremely offensive word in Chinese. But you don't see Chinese foreign students complaining when they hear someone say 'mother'

Also, if you didn't realize by now...do wonder why this was even published as news in the first place if not for the very reason that it is seen as ridiculous?

I find it hard to believe he didn't know about the similar sound in the words because almost every Chinese speaker who knows English is aware of it. There have been comedy routines about it, there are shirts sold that say " pls". So I don't know how genuine their offense to him is, but I definitely have trouble believing he didn't know they sound similar. Most of my Chinese family doesn't know English and they are still aware of this. It's just really hard to buy the "I had no idea" angle.

It's pretty funny at this point how people lose their fucking minds over this word. Sure it's a bad word and when said with malicious intent it's an awful thing, but most of the time it's said without intent, or it's misheard, misinterpreted, etc. If people even get a whiff of the word, they want blood.

I don't think he should be fired. I think he should be given some information about why what he said was inappropriate in an Americanc context. There are a million words in all languages he could have used to demonstrate his point that don't sound exactly like the n-word. Then maybe given a few days off to contemplate that information.
