I've known it was coming for a while. She was 14, which is obviously about as long as you could expect a yellow lab to live. It's just so strange. I'm 30 years old, and tomorrow will be the first day I haven't had a dog. She's been there for nearly half my life now. My mom got her when she was dying, and then passed her on to me. She was kind of a last link to my mom. The two dogs I had growing up were extraordinarily stupid, and I was really drawn to her because she was much cleverer. She could do all sorts of tricks and knew more words than the other 2 combined. So perfectly behaved and friendly. These past couple months have been pretty hard on her, and I'm glad her suffering is over.

i can only imagine how weird it would be to come home to a house with no doggies. there's no reason to wait on getting a new one.

I think what I loved most about her was her playful, almost mischievous side. She often had this weird lopsided half-smile kind of look to her. When she was young her favorite game was tag. She would bump me on the back of the leg and run away and keep looking at me longingly until I chased her. She could effortlessly outrun me then, and she would tear around in circles until my stamina ran out. She also loved to put her frisbee down and pretend to be engrossed in other things and wander away from it, but as soon as I made the smallest move toward it (even though she was facing the other direction) she would always know immediately and race me to it. She never lost that playful side even when she was older. Here's her at 12, already old and white around the muzzle, daring me to go for the frisbee and half-smiling for the camera.

Thats really sad. She lived a long, happy life and Im sure she was happy to be by your side. She may not have had the best life, you brought her joy and happiness and someone she could trust and love. You should realize how much of an impact you made on her, and how you can maybe honor her soul one last time. Maybe bring her a nice snack and toy to lay on her grave. And if you ever want to, bring joy into another dogs life too. Adopt dont shop. Peace out.

This is a big one. I know some people may feel like it's not fair to the other dog because you're "replacing" it, but so many dogs need happy homes to belong in and they're ready to love you just as much as your last pet

She will live on...She taught you things, and you will pass those things down to your next Buddy, or any of the other Furry Friends you come in contact with. Your Mother and her Dog are looking over you now. You have friends in high places. Grieve when the time is right. Live when the sky's are clear. It's a cycle. Understand, it gets easier with time.

Ah, sorry to hear that man. I always avoided these types of topics but I had to let go of my own funny old man back in July and now I feel better about posting in them.

He was 16 and had a lovely, long life, but you always think they can go a little longer, you know?

Thankfully, after a few days of being a complete mess I straightened out, and now I can mostly talk about him without feeling too bad. We got him a nice little wooden chest that's placed in our living room, so it's nice to know that he's still around, in a sense.

Hope it's the same for you.
