Tl;Dr Araki came up with Stardust Crusaders because he was unnerved as a tourist in Egypt

definitely an example of taking the flaws of the artist with the good of the artist when it comes to a lot of japanese media

I don't think Araki's any kind of malicious racist. I can understand how a guy who's used to major conformity would be stressed in a completely foreign setting.

That, and he made Avdol the goodest of the good guys. Mentor, friend, team mom.

Araki is like a national treasure to Japan. He's had fashion lines in collaboration with Gucci and art galleries dedicated to his art. There's no way he gets canceled over something like this.

this thread is like if someone ran off to another forum and tried to get people to pay attention to a duckbear thread on ce lol

It's surprisingly clean in that regard. A lot of the more ignorant stuff that's said or done is done by Joseph, but it's part of a running gag where he's basically a dumb white tourist in a foreign country who simultaneously complains about everything but also thinks he knows everything about the country.

The sketchiest one was India, which makes sense because it's one of the first places they go to and Araki's mangas have a habit of having really lame writing towards the first quarter or so of them.

Note the KKK is a major antagonist in Stone Ocean who are portrayed as reprehensible and target a major character for the one-drop rule. You could make a case that Stone Ocean only happens because of some racist Floridans in a flashback.. Additionally in SBR the narrative includes the Native Americans and is forthright about how fucked over they are by the aggressive white settlers. In fact, in SBR, Jesus lives with the Native Americans a long and full life after coming back from the dead.

There's nothing wrong with pointing out problematic thinking but a lot of those posts are like "Uhh YIKES I thought people liked Araki??" as though Araki should be disowned for this. He has progressed several decades as an author, he was around before anyone on that site were even born.

I'm very left but I do think "cancel culture" can go too far. Nobody is perfect, people are educated about these issues earlier or later in their lives. Part of the problem with American progressives is their insistence to not associate with anyone who has ever pushed legislation they disagree with in the past, ultimately isolating them from any political connections and walling themselves out of the process.

Part 2 is also the part that portrayed cops in the 30s as being racist and corrupt which is something 80s America didnt like to admit. This is why part 6 needs to come out since it has one of the better portrayals of female characters in shonen and the KKK is the root of everything bad that occurred there.

Although I dont get how stands are evil? Theyre supposed to be a manifestation of the soul and are good things just as much as they can be bad things. And of course, all the good guys have them.

Seems like a translation issue, because it makes very little sense even with context.
Though stand users that couldn't control theirs were being killed by their stands, so maybe calling them evil makes some sense.

Unfortunately, the first few chapters of SBR are pretty egregiously racist. Not sure it's on purpose, but it's pretty unsettling.

Pocoloco is "lazy black man" trope.
Sandman's power is he can run fast because he's Native American and his tribe just wants to scalp the white man.

I did not know that latter thing was a stereotype. But he's the only fast one; makes the rest of his tribe look like chumps.

Yeah, this doesn't come off as malicious racism. That said, I do think it comes off as an unconscious form of racism. A lot of people experience that and it's something that needs to be addressed/dealt with.

Also, just looking at the first page and not really seeing anything that's calling for Araki to be canceled. The quote does sound pretty bad, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt of maybe just being an awkward translation.

Not only that, his stand was just a retool of Echoes Act 2. At least his stand is visually one of the coolest in the series.

I was actually fine with that since looking back, a lot of the stands in SBR were retools, just used differently.
