God bless living in America, the greatest country in the world.

So I've got a swelling in my abdomen, left side just below ribs. Palpitating it is mildly painful and it feels hard as a rock. Been like this for two days. Google search isn't worth much but symptoms suggest it might be my spleen. It might recover on its own or it might burst.

Unfortunately, I do not have health insurance. Can't afford private insurance and I work for a company small enough they are not required to offer employee healthcare. If this is on the bad end of things then I might be looking at an ER trip and surgery real soon, and if I want to go in and get an ultrasound or any scans I'll have to pay for them out of pocket. Ultrasound runs $550 on average in the US, abdomen CT scan runs $1900 and those are *just* the scans, not everything else the hospital charges associated with them (like having a doctor actually read them). If I do that and it turns out to be nothing then I've taken on thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars in medical debt I have no easy way of paying back. If I pray that is nothing and then my spleen bursts I could die, and even if I survive I'll literally be drowning in medical debt.

I have Obamacare insurance and it's only $90/mo

They pay for nothing for the first $7k, and then anything else is completely covered

You can't hop on Obamacare?

You can join any time if you get married, move, or other life events. Being uninsured might be one of those I can't remember

I ended up with a 75-125k medical bill a few years ago.

You can file with the hospital and request that your bill be waived or very greatly decreased.

Luckily I have family that were professionals and were able to write it up for me so I only had to sign my name, as I wasn't fit for much else at that point. It is worth looking up the kind of wording and type of official request necessary if you find yourself in that situation.

My first round of chemo required a 6 day hospital stay. It cost 85k. If I had not had insurance I would be dead.

Look at it this way... if things continue to get worse, you go for the scans or surgery, and afterward you're healthy, but you have some bills to pay monthly.

It's your health. Having to deal with a little debt is much better than death.

Good luck.

According to reddit, you can ask the hospital for a reduction if you're not insured because you won't be able to pay in full anyway.

You don't have to pay immediately, man. First, work on not dying, and then apply for waived/reduced fees and charity.

No idea tbh, just was washing up in the shower the other day and touched it. It was a little sore so I kinda felt around it carefully. Feels like it is about as big as my hand.

I've been lucky enough to never be seriously injured.

My back does not seem to hurt worse than usual.

Its hard to judge how bad the swelling is because I'm a big guy (310 lbs). The fact that it is noticable beneath all that is part of what worries me.

Sounds like it's a hernia. I used to work under a hernia surgeon

Being so fat is a major risk factor for hernias

No idea how I would have gotten a hernia tho. I've not done anything recently that could have caused one I think. I'm going to monitor it closely and if it starts hurting worse seek medical help immediately. Right now its just spooky more than anything. Thanks for listening folks

It just happens to fat people. It's not always an acute injury. Moving is stressful to your body in your state
