Current Events > Got accused of cultural appropriation today due to my daughters dresse.

So today my wife, daughter and I were grocery shopping. My daughter has this really cute Chinese dress (that was given to her by someone while living in China). My daughter and I were walking down the snacks isle when this woman (about 45, white woman) looked at my daughter then looked at me and scoffed.

She then literally says "do you realize how offensive it is for you to dress your child in other cultures clothes?"

At that point my wife caught up to us, the woman looked at her and then back at me. I laughed, she scoffed again and walked away.

My wife (who isn't Chinese) was confused as fuck at the way the woman acted.

Everyone thinks it is a good thing and no one has ever even been able to understand what cultural appropriation is if I try to explain it (including my wife, she compared it to Han nationalism where you think other cultures' clothes are interior so you shouldn't wear them). I think a lot of people have confused wearing clothes in a mocking or insulting way with simply wearing clothes.

The locals in China loved seeing my daughter dressed up in their clothes. She has another similar one which is red (got it for Spring Festival last year) and people were stopping to take pictures and selfies with her.

I doubt a Chinese person would ever be offended by it unless it was somehow being used as a mockery or caricature. It always seems to be middle to upper middle class white people who get offended on behalf of other people and I'm saying that as middle class white guy.

Back when we had tourists before Coronageddon I often saw Chinese people wearing traditional Han clothing at tourist sites here in Japan as well as wearing Japanese clothing. I personally think it is a lot of fun seeing all the different clothing styles rather than everyone wearing the same shit. Also our graduation ceremony has almost all female students and some males wearing traditional Japanese clothing despite my school having a very large percentage of Chinese and Thai students.

There's a clip of a white woman livestreaming herself in a public place while wearing a kimono, and a white woman goes up to her and starts berating her for being racist. It's funny how white people get offended on the behalf of others who aren't even offended.

I think you did the right thing. Just laugh and move on. Theres not much else you can do without adding to your stress and maybe getting arrested.

I am reminded of that video of two black people arguing at a protest and some white people stand between them and yell white shield. I often find myself wishing white people would just shut up and let minorities speak for themselves. But that's never going to happen.

This story is incredibly believable. Especially for mixed-race people or people that can pass for white.

There was something that went mini-viral from Japan. This girl was dressed in traditional Japanese clothing and posting on Instagram and people were calling her a racist, culture vulture, cultural appropriator.
