Scientists underestimate climate change from time to time. They thought the ice caps would melt slower than they are because ice reflects sun/heat. But once it melted a little bit, it got a layer of water which absorbs heat and speeds up the process.
Just saying, we should be aiming to go above and beyond climate scientists reccomendations as a general rule. But this is advice that should have been heeded decades and decades ago. Its way too late now as we are past too many points of no return. All whats left for us is untold carnage. We might survive as a species if we immediately start taking measures too extreme for anyone to consider. americans wont even consider a lockdown and wearing a mask for a while though
