Board 8 > P4G/P5R talk about thread (massive spoilers)

So at the start of quarantine, I didn't have many games to play. P5R just came out, and never having played a Persona game (and not really playing any jRPGs in years), I figured I would check it out because I knew it was insanely long. Ended up falling in love with it, and then low and behold, P4G gets released for PC only a few months later.

I've now beaten both for the first time and my god are they great. I definitely give the edge to P5R, maybe because it was my first, but the music, gameplay, and story hooked me more.

I dunno, I just want to talk about these games and see if anyone has any suggestions for an rpg similar since I haven't touched them since maybe FFX. Feel free to ask me for any opinions about anything - know that I went in blind so I missed some stuff, like the politician social link in P5R which I hear is maybe the best link in the game. I also didn't touch any new game stuff yet so I know I'm missing those super secret boss fights.

...What ending did you get in P4G because your comment about going in blind and missing stuff makes me curious.

Oh I should have clarified. I went in NEARLY blind. I knew there were specific endings, and stuff you had to do to unlock the additional content from Royal and Golden. I found very very vague guides that didn't spoil anything but basically told me what specific social link I had to max, that Dec 3rd was a day I had to make certain decisions, etc. I got the true ending in both.

Persona 3 is worth a playthrough. It's basically 5 except Mementos is the whole thing (that makes it sound bad, but it's not I promise). You'll miss a lot of quality of life stuff but the characters are great and the basic social link based gameplay is the same. I recommend Persona 3 Portable but I've been told that opinion is wrong.

Best JRPGs released since FFX that are kinda Persona-ish: Trails of Cold Steel 1+2 and FE 3 Houses. Not a JRPG, but also maybe check out Danganronpa if you haven't yet.

Oh okay lol. I asked because the P4 True Ending can be very easy to miss if you don't know what to do there.

and yeah I would play P3 but I have no way to play it. I think my parents have my PS2 and they are across the country. I might try and emulate it at some point in the near future but months of persona have me kind of tapped out

You take 2/3 being correct here for sure.

Agreed with P3 being worth a playthrough if you can put up with the relatively dated and clunky feeling mechanics, disagree with anybody saying it's the best of the three.

What's the most time during a single day you spent playing either Persona 4 or 5? I find that whenever I play one, I find myself doing an all day marathon on the weekend at least once.

It's a pretty easy decision.

Also to elaborate on the music - Rivers In The Desert was a big part in getting me to even play persona. I was watching some stream and it was playing and I was like "what is this song its fucking awesome". Then I listened to the soundtrack. THEN I played all of p5r waiting to hear it and was confused why it never came up.

And then the glorious boss fight with instrumental before full blown lyrics. Mmm

Between P4 and P5, my Top 5 without thinking and sort too hard:

1. Life Will Change
2. Takeover
3. Time to Make History
4. Rivers in the Desert
5. Your Affection

I'm sure I this would change if I sat and looked through the soundtracks. Also, if we included P3, two songs are guaranteed to be in the top 5, potentially a third.

Gentle Madman (Hospital/Research Facility)
Price (Bank)
Ark (Cruise Ship)
The Days When My Mother Was There (Pyramid)
Out of Kindness (Color Garden thing)
The Whims of Fate (Casino)
Sweatshop (Space Station)
King, Queen, and Slave (Castle)
A Woman (Museum)

Mementos is technically a palace, but every theme variant there would be at the bottom so we'll just ignore that. I find myself being lower on The Whims of Fate than most people, but it's still a tier above the bottom three songs.

Favorite songs a bit unfair because while I flipped through some of the new Royal songs it wasn't exhaustive and I since stopped since I'm actually playing the game now. P4/Golden/P5Vanilla though would look something like:

4 The Whims of Fate
5 Regret

idk that definitely feels like it would change if you asked me 15 minutes from now

From flipping through the Royal OST earlier Gentle Madman might actually make #1 and Throw Away Your Mask also good chance to make the list. Add in P3 and it might kick everything except Gentle Madman off the list lol.

My first time around I went Yukari / Rise / Ann, but in my Royal playthrough I switched to Hifumi. However, I don't doubt that Makoto is a great candidate and was torn between her and Hifumi.
