...simply growing up and maturing and how much do you attribute to actually being less bothered by it through sheer exposure?

I think a good deal of it is maturity, at least for me, but I have to say I personally turned a corner with GTA3 and just casually mowing down people in the streets. Something about that really made it not a problem from then onwards.

100% of my desensitization is due to exposure, as is everybody else's. There's nothing "mature" about violence. And a rational, empathetic adult who somehow managed to go through their life without exposure to violence would be more shocked by it than a child seeing violence for the first time.

i was probably more desensitized as a kid. now when I see a bunch of baddies getting blown up in a movie I just think "wow what a massacre, they are just doing their jobs man"

I'm actually not very desensitized to it. I can usually handle typical tv/movie stuff just fine, but I don't care for excessive gore, and there are occasionally times when I can't watch scenes of torture.

Does anyone recall being sensitized to violence? I don't remember a time where seeing it particularly bothered me.

I had a wussy childhood where I got fidgety about bloody things.

Indeed I guess I'm alone in enjoying a nice cup of violence and crumpets in the foyer for my brunch good sirs.

I remember watching horror movies like Hellraiser and Subspecies when I was little kid. I don't remember ever being sensitive to fictional violence. Real gore and death videos are what I find truly disturbing and I will never watch that shit.

I'm fine with blood and death, but when you start making it look extremely painful then I get a bit squeamish. I don't like watching stuff with torture in it.

i don't think i'm densnsitized to it unless it's on a screen, and even then, i'm still sensitive to actual, non-scripted violence being broadcast, ok?

When I grew up, girls were not taught to fight. Sparring in martial arts classes and tournaments has given me confidence in being able to hold my own in any situation. Cartoon violence never seemed to have anything to do with the real world, so I'm not sure what "desensitization" refers to.

Well depends on the day how sensitive/desensitized I am, but I'm fairly confident it has to do with the news and depression more than anything else.

Real violence will always disturb me more than fictional. But even within fiction, the more clearly the victim's pain and suffering is depicted the harder it is for me to handle.

I am a functional human and recognise context that makes the same thing good or bad. I understand that violence and harm are not necessarily connected, but in the real world they are. Being a thinking creature I can understand what is bad about violence in a given context, and that scripted events by virutal presences are not something to feel bad about.

I think my desensitization was due to the fact that when my dad killed deer when I was 4 I had to carry the entrails by hand to the dumping spot. Also yes I did have a run in with a coyote over this.

Or maybe the time I caught a load of bird shot to the face when I was 13 on a dove hunt

I can't really remember a time where I was ever particularly bothered by it. I was trying to rent the Faces of Death movie when I was 12. They actually let me rent it too. I was super disappointed when so much of it was obviously fake.

The latter seems a lot more harrowing, all things considered.
