It's not an official federal agency funded by tax dollars, it's an independent agency funded solely by its own revenue stream (aka stamps and other services, at least up until 2006).

It's the only service that guarantees delivery to every American regardless of location. UPS, FedEx and other express carriers, including companies with independent upstart logistics wings like Amazon, ALL use the USPS for last mile delivery when they don't want to do it themselves because it's too much work.

It's only running a massive deficit because of the "accountability" act that was passed in 2006 by the GWB administration that requires them to prepay pensions for 50 YEARS, as well as forbids them from building revenue in any way unrelated to delivering mail (meaning they can't innovate or raise money in any way other than more efficient delivery of the mail, while running billions of dollars of deficit due to the pension issue). Before that, it was generating a profit.

The only reason the USPS is "failing" is because some members of the federal government want it to fail, because they'd make more money by outsourcing its services to their donors.

And of course, the kind of idiots who will vote for the idiots who want it abolished are among the people who rely on it the most.

The idea that it's not the government's job to ensure that its citizens can obtain basic neccessities like the fucking mail is a baffling concept to me.

I'm sure one such goal is to localize delivery services so that when rural customers complain, their state and federal reps can just shrug and tell them to advocate for an alternative private carrier

Or something like that, whatever they can do to gut an essential service and make money while telling their constituents it's for the better, you know

Hell, even better, switch to a mail subscription model, where you pick between different providers in an a la carte package. It's all the rage now

USPS refuses to deliver to my house even though FedEx and UPS do though. They get really pissy with me if I get things shipped to my home address.

I agree though, theyre a backbone of the country and we need them, fuck anyone who thinks we dont.

That's pretty fucked, tho. Why is that, if it's not too personal to ask? It's why they exist, man.

Can we shut the hell up about the postal service?

If it dies it'll be revived who gives a fuck.

If it shut down I would laugh my ass off because people like the TC would come on here right away to scream: "YOU SEE!!!!!! IT'S FUCKING DEAD!!!!! THANKS GUYS!!!!!!!!". Lmfao

Yeah, if you live in an especially inaccessible location, or otherwise in an area that doesn't have a proper address, you can get a PO box at no charge at your local post office. Rural carriers have to use their own vehicles, so if you live on top of a mountain or something crazy, don't expect a USPS-branded Dodge Caravan to pull up in your driveway and hand you mail personally

No they dont, you have to pay for your PO Box.

https://faq.usps.com/s/article/PO-Box-The-Basics#whatispoboxserv

PO Box service is a premium service offered for a fee to anyone who requires more than free home delivery or general delivery.

Note: A PO Box may be available for no fee, in specific situations, for those who are not eligible for home delivery.

For over two centuries, the USPS has been the backbone of the countrys democratic system. Without the USPS and the subsidization [https://about.usps.com/who-we-are/postal -history/periodicals-postage-history.htm] of newspaper and periodical postage rates, hundreds of millions of Americans all across our countrys history would not have been able to be informed voters. For hundreds of years, the USPS was the primary medium by which the country kept itself informed.

And now its under attack. [https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/08/06/top- democrats-say-postmaster-general-acknowledged-new-policies-that-workers- say-are-delaying-mail/]

"But we live in a digital era"

Shit breaks. Shit gets hacked. The postal service has reliably - and honorably - been transmitting essential information across the US for centuries. Do you really want to give up a tried-and-true backup when the digital realm has new threats literally every day?

Argh. They're not gonna come and tell you what to think, but by undermining the USPS they take away your chance to be informed. It really grinds my gears and I wish people took more notice because yeah, its not a sexy topic, but god damn is this important. If you really wanna dive deeper into how important a socialized, public parcel service has been historically relevant to the democratic system, check out The Death and Life of American Journalism. Amazing book.

USPS fucking sucks. I'd rather pay slightly more and had have a service contract with UPS or Fedex to deliver the mail.

In fact, why are physical documents still a thing? Everything should be done online these days.

The only thing I don't get, reading about the latest USPS news today... is how Democrat lawmakers are claiming that the new postmaster is trying to run it like a business instead of a service. Except it's not necessarily treated like a public service in government, otherwise they might have allocated funding to it already? Idk.
