Alright. American entered the war in 1941, after the attack on Pearl Harbour. The American army did a fullscale invasion of Europe in 1944, beginning with the Normandy Landings. Between 1941 and 1944, what were the American armed forces actually DOING? I know the air force was doing attacks on targets, and the navy had their aircraft carriers positions as a kind of defence perimeter at various locations, but was the army, which already had a large number of people in it, just...sitting around, twiddling its thumbs? What am I missing?

The Army did a lot in the Pacific - everyone thinks it was just one big Navy operation with Marines but in reality there were lots of Army units landing as well.

There was no US Air Force in WWII. That in fact, was the US Army Air Corps. If you're strictly talking about infantry/tanks/etc. they were involved in North Africa and Italy. Also, you are ignoring the fact that the Pacific theater existed. The army was fighting on the islands along with the Marines

So america entered the war in december 1941. So 41 was already done. In January 42 usa starts landing forces in europe. In northern ireland. You also have to remember that they were concentrated in the pacific with japan. At then of 42 allied forces landed in africa. In 43 they landed in italy. In 44 they landed in france. All the while still fighting japanese forces. And it takes time to plan and launch the biggest invasion in history.
