Lithium has been used to treat depression, mania, etc. for decades, though tbh I thought it was seen as kind of outdated at this point.

Apparently not in the natural occurring dosage that we're seeing in some drinking water.

Yes this has been suggested for years. An old study showed that in a community that had naturally occurring Lithium in its drinking water (where people consumed roughly 3 mg of Lithium a day, which is extremely low), the rates of suicide and violence dropped dramatically. Whereas someone with mania or severe depression would require Lithium in the 100s-1000s mg, the healthy brain can also see benefit from tiny amounts of Lithium. I fully support fortifying our drinking water with Lithium, I believe there are some European countries that are considering it.

That's fucking crazy, why aren't we already doing this? I'm sure of numbnut conspiracy airheads will have plenty to say about it though. Then you have people who muddy the waters like post #14 by conflating tiny, safe amounts with gigantic doses

Wait, do people still drink tapwater?

How is this going to help? Everyone would rather pay ten times as much to drink bottled water these days.

I use a Zero Water filter anyway so it filters out everything good and bad.

If it was everywhere it would be in all the market beverages as well. Those drinks are already 99.9999% regular tap water so you'd get it from drinking shit like coke.

It's pretty bad as a means to treat bipolar because it fucks up kidneys. There are much better, safer bipolar drugs out there. Unfortunately one of the better ones can be used universally. I don't know what it's called (my brother is on it) but it causes a weird rash in around half of people who go on it and if you get the rash, you need to stop taking it immediately because it's a warning sign of something really serious, so like half of people who go on it are fine and it works really well (like my brother, who did not respond well to lithium) but for the other half it's life threatening or close to it.

I don't know much about the subject but adding lithium to drinking water sounds really fucking irresponsible

Your opinion about Lithium is blatantly false.

And your brothers medication is called Lamotrigine, and the rash is called Stevens Johnson syndrome which is exceptionally rare and almost never occurs now in modern psychiatry.

Better to not call something irresponsible when you dont know anything about the topic.

For bipolar? What other mood stabilizers have you been on? Valproate is an interesting choice.

I was on lithium when i was first diagnosed as bipolar. I hated it. After that i forget what all i tried but in the end welbutrin worked the best since by that point my manic phases were so few and far between.

Med free for like 7 years now.
