I was just thinking how big business, controls so much of what we see,do ,hear, eat ect. How there is almost nothing we can do stop the powerful people from just walking all over us. However if we just quit the game. We might not win but we won't lose over and over.

I'm not technically off the grid, I have decent internet, electricity, running water, etc. I am in the mountains in a very small town, population is around 850. I live on 10 acres and my closest neighbor is a mile away, it's about a 30 minute drive to the closest Walmart. I learned how to farm and garden, I have chickens and whatnot and I love it. It's just me in the wife, we gotta put extra work in but it's rewarding and keeps us healthy.

Yes. But not to be off the grid. Just cause I think I find that lifestyle preferable over this. But the temptation with it being everywhere is too much for me. I need out of sight out of mind for the first year to adapt and not go back into the trap.

Imagine if all of this was a huge mistake that we can't see because we were born into it. Like in 100 years, everyone ditched all the shit we take for granted cause they finally realized how much stress, pollution and what not it causes. I think people see those who don't take to technology as dumber, when really it's the other way around. Not counting the people who actually invent the stuff.

I have to believe when the horseless carriage was introduced if people saw this, they never would have gone for it.

Probably honestly, I never liked the city, big groups of people, and growing up we always lived in the woods and whatnot and I loved it.

Living expensives are very cheap, I think the only thing I didn't anticipate was, i'm not gonna say requirement, but the need of you being there from the other people around. I'm sure it's not like that everywhere, but when we moved in, our neighbors were mostly elderly, and very eager to teach us new skills. They were constantly leaving stuff on our porch like vegetables, firewood, it's just how it is here. So we basically started gardening and raising chickens to help return the favor to the locals. Everyone just sorta helps out and gives what they can.

I couldn't do the chicken thing. I would have a big freezer and just get a lot of food from the store and keep in there for about 3 months then go into town with my dog and my turtle. To pick up new food, then go back. I just wish I had the money to movie and job I could do remotely.

I only have hens and they are all free range egg layers. None of them get butchered, nor do I trade any for butchering. There is one guy in town and he's had generations of his family raising cows and chickens for butchering, and I believe he's the only one that does it. A few of us do eggs, but there's a high need for them.

now I could do that, I know it is hypocritical of me to eat chicken, but i just can't kill one. I stop eating mammals for that reason.. but that sweet sweet chicken is something I can't leave.

That makes sense - were you married before you guys moved out there? I'd be moving 2.5 hours from friends/family and about an hour from the closest "big" town (16k). I tend to be an introvert so I wouldn't miss the lack of bars/etc, but at the same time I could see myself just sitting at home all the time I'm not working

Yep, and most of her family is about 3 hours away, we both always wanted a life like this. There is a few things in town here, but not much. Nashville is under 2 hours away so it's not a tremendous effort if we feel like going to a sporting event or a nice restaurant or anything. I find I keep developing new interests and hobbies to keep my time occupied. I took up archery, and i'm thinking about building a pretty large pond and have some fish or turtles in there.

I'm constantly inspired seeing what things other people do around here.

Yeah, in the town I grew up in the main currency was favors.

You helped out, say one guy had a bobcat, another guy had an air compressor and accompanying tools, they would switch off if the other needed it and come over to help out.

My dad used to go around and help people with their cars as he was a mechanic before he went to college and became an engineer. Or you could just chop wood or buy a case of beer for the people that helped you out.

Money rarely changed hands unless you were buying someone's old car or something.
