https://www.cbsnews.com/news/california-becomes-first-state-to-hit-half-a-million-coronavirus-cases/
More than half a million people have tested positive for the coronavirus in California, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. California is the first U.S. state to hit 500,000 cases. More than 9,000 people have died from coronavirus in California, and more than 6,000 people are in the hospital or an intensive care unit, according to state data published Friday morning. [..] According to the state, 33 of 58 counties are currently flagged for having elevated disease transmission, increased hospitalization rates, and/or a limited hospital capacity. [...] Only Sao Paulo, Brazil, has more cases than California, with over 540,000. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Texas has 90% of the cases that California has, but just about 75% of the population. It's a population of 39 million vs 29 million. If the same percent of California's population had covid-19 as in Texas, California would be over 600,000 by now, if my calculations are correct.

That's still a shitload and is a meaningless pointWell, two people had ask about the population compared to another state, I did the math on the 2nd most populated state. So it's valid, because it answers a question asked in the thread. Florida and New York fare even worse, as they have even more cases than Texas, but they have almost half the population of California. If those States had the same population of California, they would have well over eight hundred thousand cases. --- Omelette du abbatage. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Using per population, the U.S. isn't the worst country in managing COVID then.
Highest per capita cases are often found in states with smaller populations where testing may lead to more detected cases. The highest number of reported cases per 100,000 people is now found in Qatar (3,834), followed by French Guiana (2,587), Bahrain (2395), San Marino (2,024) and Chile (1849). Of the countries with the highest total case numbers, the United States of America have a count of 1,326 cases per 100,000 people (with a total of 4.4 million cases), followed by Brazil (2.6 million total, 1,201 relative), India (1.6 million total, 119 per capita). And if we're going to use mortality, European countries are doing worse than the U.S. The highest mortality rates (reported deaths per number of confirmed cases) are found in Yemen with 28.2%, followed by France (17.3%), United Kingdom (15.2%), Belgium (14.5%), Italy (14.2%) and Hungary (13.2%). Eleven countries have a mortality of 10% or higher. So are you going to look at raw numbers, or per capita? ... Copied to Clipboard!

Pretty much every sane person in California was warning Newsom about reopening too early, but nope, and now we're here. We barely flatten the curve and then they decided to reopen.
I'm also pretty pissed at our county's health officer because he was praised for having a strong statement against anti-maskers and people who refused to shelter-in-place, but the following week later he urged businesses to reopen. Florida is right behind them, and they have over 100k more active cases. Active cases means more at this point than total cases. Still, that's not good.
Honestly though we are just splitting hairs, all these states that are red hot are doing poor, who really cares who is worse than the other. We need to stop focusing or red and blue states and focus on the fact that people are dying. California, Texas, Florida, New York, it's all the same. --- IL&MYD TYFE ... Copied to Clipboard!
