He had a fatalistic obsession w/ Lincoln and his cabinet of political rivals working together that just wasn't compatible w/ the modern GOP. Wasted a ton of time courting conservative Reps and Senators he never got anyway and basically squandered the 2 years Dems had total control, which is not something that happens often for them. The biggest example of course was immediately dropping the public option from Obamacare to appease them. His 2nd greatest mistake was not putting Garland on the Supreme Court. He assumed Hillary would win and basically ceded his court pick to Republicans.
