https://www.theverge.com/2020/7/24/21336160/eiyuden-chronicle-suikoden-successor-kickstarter-launch

Today, a new team called Rabbit & Bear Studios announced an upcoming Kickstarter campaign to fund Eiyuden Chronicle, a roleplaying game designed to evoke PlayStation-era nostalgia. The campaign will debut on July 27th, and the team is led by Yoshitaka Murayama, director and writer on the first two Suikoden titles. This is a new title for me, Murayama tells The Verge. Or rather is a combination of all my experiences as a creator and trying to expand on that base.Aside from Murayama, Rabbit & Bear features an impressive list of talent. That includes: Junko Kawano, the lead artist on Suikoden 1 and 4; Junichi Murakami, art director on Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow; Suikoden Tactics director Osamu Komuta; and composers Motoi Sakuraba and Michiko Naruke.

The Kickstarter link went up a few hours ago, got so much traffic that it crashed the site for half an hour, and has already surpassed its base funding goal!

Suikoden, especially the first two games in the series, is legendary and some of the best JRPGS ever made. Unfortunately, the IP is owned by Konami, so much like with Iga (who's already personally promoted this kickstarter and has longtime colleagues from Konami working on this team) and Bloodstained having to create a new IP instead of just using the Castlevania world and lore, Murayama has to do the same thing here.

Here's a story synopsis:
Our story begins in one corner of Allraan, a tapestry of nations with diverse cultures and values. By dint of sword, and by way of magical objects known as rune-lenses, the lands history has been shaped by the alliances and aggressions of the humans, beastmen, elves, and desert people who live there. The Galdean Empire has edged out other nations and discovered a technology that amplifies the rune-lenses magic. Now, the Empire is scouring the continent for an artifact that will expand their power even further. It is on one such expedition that Seign Kesling, a young and gifted imperial officer, and Nowa, a boy from a remote village, meet each other and become friends. However, a twist of fate will soon drag them into the fires of war, and force them both to reexamine everything they believe to be right and true.

Pledge some cash to support what's sure to be an incredible game, and blow through whatever stretch goals the team can come up with! :D

They're doing consoles as stretch goals. And they cleared $1 million in like 6 hours so...yeah, they'll reach those.

At a minimum, PS5, NeXtBox, and (if it's there by then) the next Nintendo console. Higher tier will be PS4, Xbone, and maybe Switch...but it's clear they're hoping they don't have to do that.
I saw people say it's probably "Unity 4" for the engine and that doesn't play well w/ Switch. But I don't know, just speculation.

Okay but the physical backing option only says physical, it doesn't let you pick what system. And some physical games for PC are still being made, limited run games did star war episode 1 racer for PC.

The systems it's targeting aren't even out yet and in Nintendo's case, may not exist.

I backed Bloodstained, and I don't think it was until a while later that I got a survey to choose my system (I chose Wii U... then it got canned, changed to PS4, then it got delayed long enough that I got a Switch and changed my mind yet again, lol). The game's at least 2 years away.

It is a super awkward time to do a video game kickstarter, right before a new gen, though. I'm hoping and praying it's delayed like most videogame KS projects. I have NO INTENTION of owning another console by Fall 2022, and ideally would like this on a Nintendo console. Been hoping to boycott PS5, and...I've never trusted Xbox.

I've never done a double copy type backer tier before. I assume you can choose a different one for each, but I really don't know.

With Bloodstained, they sent out emails from "fan gamer" to choose your shipping address, console, etc...
Also had surveys asking about things we'd like in the game, whether we preferred to get the game sooner or be delayed for polish, etc...

The first backer tier is like $10 and doesn't give anything, it's just for those who want to support it in some little bit.

The next tier at $38 is the digital copy.

The KS page says that any stretch goals that are added to the game will be free to backers and possibly held as paid DLC for those who wait to buy the game when it releases. Obviously some stuff couldn't be gated off, but they at least seem to intend to make sure there's some benefit to being a KS backer.

Why?
Because Sony's gone crazy with censorship of smaller Japanese video game studios, and the only way they'll understand their folly is a hit to their pocketbooks.
I didn't even intend to get a Switch until like this year, but ended up getting it in 2018 just to have an alternative console to get new games on.
A lot of Japanese devs that previously only released on PS4 because that was the home for such games are now trying to release on Switch and/or PC as well so they're not just helpless to Sony's whims.

EDIT: You can google for more info or check the PS4 boards. I really don't want to derail a topic on this game into one about Sony's censorship.

Not looking to convince anyone, but my experience with Kickstarter has been mostly positive. I didn't back Mighty No 9, but I did back the Ouya (lol) so it hasn't been all positive, but for the small sample size of projects I've backed, there's been more hits than misses.

I'd say the biggest issues facing potential backers is the unknown - you're essentially gambling on the promise of a product you haven't seen fully realized, and the wait. There's been projects I've backed that have released within a couple years, and there's projects I backed 5 or 6 years ago that still haven't released (to be fair, I believe those projects have early access betas and alphas but I never touch those. Prefer to wait on the finished product).

Yeah, there's been plenty of video game KS success stories, but also some big fails.

Thus far I've been pretty cautious and done well.
Backed Bloodstained (success) and Subverse (still in progress...but it was only $13 to get the game, so it's not a big investment if it does fail). Also Order of the Stick comics reprint drive...that was an easy one...just reprinting existing comics and getting a copy as the reward.

This one seems like the team knows what they're doing. There's a lack of info on the actual programming expertise and only like a half minute of actual gameplay footage so far though, so it is a bit shakier than some other stuff I've seen.

Yeah, I wish Xbox was an alterntive option, but it's really not. My future is apparently Nintendo and PC gaming, unless Sony does a complete 180, which I don't expect they will. ...I've never been much of a PC gamer, and don't intend to get a desktop computer, I like my laptop... I haven't played yet, either. I know it wasn't received well. I remember not being impressed with the Kickstarter even though I dig Mega Man, and once it released and bombed I had very little enthusiasm to pick it up.

Suikoden 1 & 2 are two of my all-time favorite games. Played the hell out of both on PS1 :3

Unfortunate news (from the comments; because yes, I've literally been Ctrl+F searching them multiple times specifically to see if there was an answer to this burning question):

Troy Starling about 3 hours ago
Will you be hiring Miki Higashino? Is she busy? I'd really prefer to get music similar to the first two games, as I think her style was very distinct and many of Suiko2's songs are among my favorite of any JRPG (the battle themes, the town BGMs, etc). Sincerely hoping that we can get her back on board.
Don't get me wrong, Motoi Sakuraba has his moments... but if possible I'd really want Higashino-san on board. The music of Suiko1+2 was almost half the experience really.

@xjayguyx

Not your exact situation, but I saw this in the KS comments:

Corey Scott about 8 hours ago
If I select the physical and digital combo pack would I be able to choose different systems for each?

Rabbit & Bear Studios [Creator] about 3 hours ago
Yes.

Side note as I've been searching through them: I've always hated the format of the KS comments section. Trying to find specific information in them has always been a chore and they could make at least some effort to make it easier to sort through. Even just an option to only view comments w/ a response from the creator would be nice. Literally thousands of comments by the time the project is funded, you have to load more after each dozen or so, and seems to be organized solely by time of posting (at least replies do nest....)

They added some new digital tiers for those interested, to get a digital version of the art book or OST w/ the digital game (or all 3). If you like digital games, the trio of them is still cheaper than physical game + physical OST and a pretty good deal.

They've confirmed army battles in the comments.

Haven't seen stuff about duels, but that's piss easy to incorporate so I don't see why not.

Minigames and other additional stuff I guess just keep checking... They mentioned DLC as stretch goals that backers get for free and anyone else pays for, but I don't think any of the current goals would be under that...

Probably because they know holding out the last few characters as a stretch goal is an easy way to get fans to pile in more money?

lol

You know they're gonna reach the 108, so it doesn't really matter. I assume just a shrewd business decision to get people passionately funding it because, "it's not right if there's less than 108!"

They will likely have all 108 characters included whether they hit the monetary goal or not. This is just a marketing tactic. Carrot on a stick.

$2.5 million reached!

Newest update:
Surveys
Weve received a lot of questions regarding the surveys some backers have been receiving during their pledging process. The official Kickstarter survey where you will be able to choose your platform of choice, job reward tier, and other rewards based on your pledge will arrive several weeks after the campaign has ended.
If you have received a different survey upon backing the game, that is only a marketing survey, and is not related to the official survey in any way. You do not need to fill out this survey unless you want to. However, in order to receive your proper rewards, you will need to fill out the official Kickstarter survey that will arrive weeks after the campaign concludes.
You will be able alter your survey answers, including address, up until the survey is locked. After that, if you need to change your address or wish to update your reward choices, you can send a direct request through Kickstarters back end.

Party conversations. Looks like the next "hidden" stretch goal is another party member

So like Tales skits? Also did they say if the PC version will have Denuvo on it?

From the Kickstarter:

  • Party Conversations - At this stretch goal, your party members will have reason to talk to each other once in a while. Whether it's to hash out a disagreement or ask a burning question, your team will have the chance to learn more about each other.
Not sure how in-depth these conversations will go or if they'll affect the plot/ending. Usually with Kickstarters stuff gets unveiled/announced then detailed later (if at all).

No idea about DRM
