While he could have called 911, if he helped the man up and injured him more he's liable and could be sued.

Also why did the family leave him outside so long without checking on him?

When my great grandfather was around I made sure to check on him every 5 minutes for this exact reason. He had dementia and was fall prone...

Sad but true.

Yup. Its tough having a family member with dementia/Alzheimers but ya gotta stay on them. Otherwise theyll wander off.

In the age of COVID, he shouldn't try to assist -- instead he should notify the family or 911, but he did neither. Likewise, I wonder why it took the family so long to find the guy. Feels neglectful on their part.

I mean in America there was that story of a life guard who got sued for saving a person from drowning, but considering coronavirus is everywhere and the guy didn't bother to tell anyone and/or the authorities to come arrest the old man, he was pretty neglectful and should be disciplined.

He probably should have called 911, given the potential risk involved in helping him up (both in causing further harm and because of Covid), but I would guess his delivery schedule was too tight for him to take that kind of time out of his route without jeopardizing his job.

He should have helped the old guy get help but definitely not help him up. Also FedEx would get mad if he stopped driving for any significant amount of time.

Idc, if you see an old man fall over and refuse to help him up for selfish reasons you're a dickhead.

I would have gotten fired on the spot if I had to.

Some people made good points about not moving him, but frankly, I would have tried to help him before I thought about that, probably. I'd have called 911 as well. I hope a boss would understand that kind of thing; the boss from my job I'd have right now if it weren't for covid would understand.

Again, I understand that. It's just not what would be running through MY mind if I saw an old man fall over.

While I most likely would have helped, I dont know how far Id go. Losing my job is bad if I dont have any money to fall back on. Im halfway across the country from my family. And I need to be able to pay all my bills and stuff still...

Good Samaritan laws vary state by state and often can't protect you even when they logically should. Especially in these uncertain times when things are uncertain.

This.

We don't know his wages and hours. We don't know his cost of living. Could be a bad day away from being broke.

It's easy to sit in our houses and judge, and think we'd do better. It's harder to say what we'd do for sure. And to be fair, that could go either direction. But at the end of the day, unless someone has actually been in that situation it's all speculation.

Many people can't afford to get fired. They can't just pick up a new job at the drop of a hat.

At the end of the day it sucks, it really does. But I'm reserving my judgements for the way things are that that worker would have genuine reason to fear being fired and/or sued for helping another person.

Cold, but he did the right thing for a few reasons.

First off, delivery times/quotas for drivers are harsh.

But most importantly, in the current environment, that 89 year-old really shouldn't be coming into physical contact with anyone but his family.

Disciplined??? Knowing FedEx he would've been disciplined for spending more than 60 seconds not driving.
