Republicans remain deeply divided over how to address the ongoing coronavirus pandemic as party leaders enter negotiations on a fifth package of relief legislation this week, muddying the waters for bipartisan talks that also involve Democrats and senior Trump administration officials. Several Senate Republicans emerged from their caucus lunch on Tuesday frustrated by the meeting, which exposed lingering concerns among deficit hawks over how much the federal government has already spent on the Covid-19 response and how much more it can afford to do. "A lot of people were expressing serious concerns that we are spending too damn much money," Senator Ted Cruz told reporters. Senator Rand Paul, always keen on reducing federal spending, compared the GOP caucus lunch to a meeting of "Bernie bros" or the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

While Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows expressed optimism earlier in the day Congress could come to terms on a compromise agreement between the parties and pass a bill before the end of the week, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell scoffed at such an ambitious target date. "No," he told reporters at a news conference about whether that timeline was feasible, though he did say the GOP would introduce its own bill "in the next few days." Even Democratic leaders couldn't help themselves from commenting on the apparent disarray among Republicans. Republicans are in shambles," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters on Tuesday as he headed into a meeting with Speaker Nancy Pelosi Mr McConnell also indicated on Tuesday that Republicans are intent to authorise "another round of direct payments to help American families keep driving our national comeback," though he did not specify who would qualify for a second round of stimulus checks, or how much they would be worth. Mr McConnell has not acceded to Democratic demands to renew expanded unemployment benefits signed into law in March and that give recently laid off workers $600 per week. That's more than many laid-off Americans can make at new jobs, thus incentivising them to stay home instead of finding new work, Republicans have said.

We been alone for 4 months. If you got no unemployment and out of work. You got one $1200 check to survive for 4 months. Only thing saving these people is many places are banned from evicting them. Once that expires a lot of people are going to be homeless.

The problem is people aren't taking that money and staying home, they are going out as much as possible, taking vacations, etc. The hotel I work at is fully booked for the next month. But our staff is so short because nobody feels the need to apply for work right now. I get one day off every two weeks, why should people not wanting to work get more than I do? Another shutdown is the only way I'm ever going to get a rest.

What kind of wages you expect these businesses to pay, especially since alot of them are struggling? It would have to be alot to counter money for nothing. Imagine if you had a choice, $600 a week for doing absolutely nothing or $1200 a week but for that you have to work six 10-hour days. Which would you pick?

So the government and find billions of dollars to give to corporations with no real oversight on who gets that money or what they can do with it and they don't give a fuck, but a bunch of people who managed to profit from the unemployment over the employed means they have to shut all of it down How come they just don't give extra money to the people still employed,too? I mean not only do they have to work in this they've all effectively become bouncers to the anti-mask group and risk being killed for blocking their way, those crappy ads on TV calling these people heroes and corporations pretending they care doesn't cut it, the money that went into those ads should have gone to the workers

The wages were set while we were having a record economic boom. They didn't pay higher wages because they could get a way with it. People who work should make enough to make working truly worth their while, not just because they'll fall off a cliff if they ever stop.

But Washington should really be passing laws about mortgage forgiveness and buffering bank's losses. The economy will go to shit though once the 600 thing ends.
