I want to say it was Lance, but he's an elite four. So if he was demoted from champ to elite four right before you got there, who was the member that was kicked out to make room for Lance?

Also Blue was only champion for 5 minutes lol

I was always under the impression that it was just the Elite Four. I think Lance says something like "you're now the Champion! ...or, at least, you would have been if you were just a bit earlier."

The original idea was that the fifth battle was a surprise, they only ever mention the Elite Four.

Oh that makes sense I guess. Make Blue the first and last guy you fight, but keep the last fight a secret.

I would assume that the spot was either vacant or it was Lance because Lance is the GSC champ. Given that Blue was champ for 5 minutes, the previous champ couldn't have gotten far so the fact that we don't see him suggests either a vacancy or Lance.

Not until second gen. He was just a gym leader in RBY

Also Lance is the champion in gen 2. But this is like 2 or 3 years after gen 1.

There are implications it was Oak, but that doesn't make any sense since Gary became champion but lost it before Oak could arrive to congratulate him. Oak may have been one prior but he isn't the one whom Gary dethroned. Going by the dialogue and everything there was no champion prior to Gary so it's possible that the prior one retired or abdicated for some other reason.

Probably. Blue just happened to be there and wanted a challenge when he heard you were there.

it's also possible that Gary was the first challenger to beat the Elite Four, making him the first Champion.

Then wouldn't Lance be the champion? I mean the gym systems been clearly around for at least a bit (long enough for Viridian City to both get a leader and fall into disrepair) so it's clearly not 'new'. It's possible that, with Giovanni leaving the gym there haven't been challengers for a while since no one could get eight badges and they were looking for a replacement. But that doesn't change that there were people before...

Seems far more likely that the prior champ just abdicated or was removed. Here's a crazy idea, what if it was because of Team Rocket? Like either they had ties to Rocket or, alternatively, were pressured to resign by them?
