Current Events > Accidentally laughed at my friend when he told me his mom died.

So I was visiting a few friends and one of them, let's call him Robert, was playing Red Dead Redemption. My other friend, let's call him Steve, was next to me and we hadn't talked in years so we were catching up.

He told me that his mom passed away recently because they were driving together as a family in Mexico, and a horse randomly escaped a ranch near them and the horse collided with their car, killing the mother in the car wreck.

My reaction was pretty much "Dude oh my God that's horrible I'm so sorry." And I was really feeling for this dude. He wasn't crying or anything, but you could tell he was down about it. Very mature guy.

Robert, who was also listening to the story (but while playing Red Dead Redemption) speaks and says" Man what the fuck. Thats messed up. You know what man? Just for that... " and in the game, he gets off the horse and he gets a shotgun and he starts shooting the living shit out of the horse he was riding and he says " Fuck you, bitch. That's what you deserve. " He wasn't trying to make fun of my friend's mother's death, he is just a moron and can't see how dumb or insensitive or random that is.

But point is... I couldn't help but burst out laughing my ass off because of how wildly inappropriate it was and unexpected. I tried to shut up and I wanted to die for laughing at this worst moment and I kept apologizing to Steve but Steve said it's alright. Steve knew Robert was an idiot. I couldn't stop laughing and eventually I was able to shut up but I still had to hold in those damn smiles. God damn it.

I really did care, I just couldn't help it.

This. Not everyone would think thats insensitive. Some people try to make light of serious things to brighten the mood.

And some people wont go into a sobbing mess about what Robert did. It could be funny to him. It just depends on the person.

I have a similar short story.

My best friend's mom had just died like a month before. We we're playing Ape Escape 3 and the boss keeps going "Why don't you run to your mommy". It was awkward as shit. But eventually he just yells at the tv "I CAN'T" and I busted out laughing >_>.

To put more context on it. It blends into our style of humor. We pretend we're way more upset at irritating things cause it let's us get that energy out while at the same time getting a laugh.

So I think me laughing saved it from being awkward, but I still think about how wrong it felt.

You guys are right I didn't realize that it could help until now. I just try to be so polite that I felt it was rude of both of us. But maybe it's better to have some personality and try to help from your heart sometimes haha
