Board 8 > King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) R1D15: Constantine vs Funny Valentine (High)

Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

John Constantine (DC)

Capable of incredible magic (particularly in manipulating luck), John Constantine prefers to use wit and guile to solve his problems. Also he's immortal.

Funny Valentine (Jojo)

The President of the United States, Funny Valentine not only has a similar ability to change timelines to Elizabeth, but he also is a Jojo villain, and thus his power Love Train is far too complicated to explain in a blurb

So Valentine's dimension power works whenever he can press himself or somebody else between two objects (for example, curtains and a wall, a piece of paper and the floor, etc). He uses this very extensively to scout and recruit allies. He may be unable to enlist help from anybody else, but he can grab other copies of himself who lack the power but would serve as fine bait if needed, and he can explore the territory in a world where Constantine doesn't exist.

More pertinently, he has Love Train, a power he can access while he's near Lucy, who holds the corpse of Jesus Christ. Welcome to Jojo. This extends a beam between her and him which redirects all attacks as bad fortune to other places, leaving only good luck behind to benefit him. His attacks generally will deal damage that is always eventually fatal, although this wouldn't likely affect Constantine. He chills out in a pocket Universe, invulnerable to just about every attack in his world.

So, once more we get a very strange coincidence in matches. Not only does one of his powers match the most notable of both of yesterday's combatants', but Love Train is luck-based just like Constantine's favored ability. I would say that they basically cancel out. Any bad luck sent Valentine's way will fly off, though I suppose Constantine could make himself luckier instead of hurting Valentine with it.

I was expecting Valentine to just have D4C, but Love Train is really broken. An aspect of D4C that you didn't mention is that if someone comes into contact with themselves from another dimension, they're both destroyed

didn't think it'd be relevant, since bringing in *more* Constantines just seems like a really bad idea

I have no idea how to get a read on either of these characters, what do they do when they're actually fighting

Not sure that in combat will work in this situation, neither of them can really deal a blow to the opponent... but I think Constantine has an advantage with Illusions and knowledge, but it's a hard thing to consider in a power vs power situation, I don't think that this versus will be a direct combat victory.

For the sake of clarity, does Valentine count as losing if the one at the start of this fight dies? One of the more annoying things about fighting him is that if you don't kill him instantly, he can just swap with another version of himself, and for all intents and purposes, the new one becomes the "real" Valentine.

honestly idk. Originally I had it so that you'd have to kill all of them that are in the arena, but this was before I buffed him with Love Train because he has no killing power. Now I guess just killing the original is enough. Let's say that he's aware of this and will be careful to not let that version die

Regardless, Constantine finds a way. Constantine has fought worse things than a metrosexual stripper president with a few cosmic abilities. Particularly with how Valentine's greatest defensive power clearly and visually emanates from a certain point. You don't even need Constantine's vast knowledge of the arcane to realize 'hey the girl is buffing my enemy with this crazy light beam'. Constantine has innumerable ways at his disposal to separate the two and once love train is down Valentine has no way to stop his opponent's luck fuckery. Not to say that Constantine wouldn't be able to eventually find a way to break through love train anyway, but the removal of Lucy is the clearest and most likely outcome. Constantine is no idiot.

Personally it's that I don't think that time travel would be reconciled with the way Jojo did their timelines, and Valentine has a lot of scouting capability he'd use in order to get the drop on Constantine

And I don't know if Constantine would have a way around this, or is even a competent fighter at all, because nobody who supports him has detailed his abilities at all and I don't know what he's capable of

We've got "has innumerable ways at his disposal" and that's it

Constantine is able to detect invisible foes & also omnipresent beings, and could most likely cast a sigil to protect him from that ability too.
