Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

Kat (Gravity Rush)

A Shifter, Kat is able to manipulate her own gravity at will, as well as create a statis field around her.

The Ultimate Lifeform, Shadow the Hedgehog's edge is the sharpest weapon in all of fiction, being capable to cut through literally anything with absolute ease

What can Kat do offensively? Shadow has speed, range, and teleportation (though I don't know what the in-universe mechanics are on if he needs a Chaos Emerald for that or not).

Can Shadow hurt someone flying around? I'm assuming he doesn't have his guns for this, since those were only in one game.

Shadow has a homing attack, so presumably he can lock onto Kat if she comes close.

i want to point out that kat can only carry a certain amount of objects with her gravity power, she cannot stop an entire clip of bullets from up to two uzis

meh, he doesn't really need him. Kat has great reflexes but nowhere near the ultimate lifeform shadow the hedgehog

Feel like Kat would win against base shadow. She's durable enough physically to be able to survive a fall from very extreme heights, can block gunfire using anything around her as protection, and would be able to pick up shadow and just launch him towards any direction (or into anything he'd get really hurt by) if he gets close enough to her, although to be fair i don't know that much about shadow's full toolkit. She also has some form of teleport attacks in her lunar style so shadow wouldn't be alone with that.

i think Kat actually does have a decent shot but if you go by actual Sonic canon even without an emerald Shadow and Sonic can move close to the speed of sound, most likely Shadow would just get behind her and shoot her in the head. Sonic and Shadow are completely broken even without the chaos emeralds for the same reason the Flash is always broken

iirc Sonic's base top speed is 3000 MPH and Shadow is a little slower than him (just a little bit, Shadow is almost identical but Sonic has hero power and needs to be canonically the fastest so Shadow's top speed is like 2900 MPH or something) but regardless if you couple that with bloodlust and a high-powered handgun Shadow wins this easily, although it has been a while since i played gravity rush and i dont remember if kat has any similarly broken traits

Kat can speed herself up using her gravity powers, but she would need to take short breaks to recharge her powers if she overuses them, while Shadow has no such limitation. She can use gravity to grab objects and protect herself from Shadow's attacks, but she would be too slow to be able to hit him either by throwing these objects at him, or by kicking him. She could catch him by using gravity in a wide area around her instead of targeting him specifically, but again her gravity is finite and she would need to deal some major damage in the short time she has him since Shadow is quite durable, which I don't think she would be capable of.

I think you gotta give Shadow a chaos emerald, he can't use his trademark ability without it
its like having Doomslayer without any of his guns

anyway Shadow way too fast regardless

I also like to point out that shadow is canonically the ultimate life form and even though he is not as fast as sonic he has perfect metabolism and doesnt even have to poopy or peepee

yeah I'm sold

it helps that he has gunz so he never has to get within close range to get ragdoll'd or caught in AoE

This is a legit question, because I don't know the answer: does Shadow (and Sonic) actually have any instances of going this fast in canon? The games constantly tout the idea that they go incredibly fast but I'm curious to know how that translates to actual canon. I know it's weird gameplay and all so it should be taken with a grain of salt, but Sonic can't even outrun Robotnik at the end of Sonic 2, and Shadow is comparable Sonic's top speed.

Shadow probably takes it, but I'm still curious about speed feats for round 2.

Sonic has outrun black holes on at least two occasions (the end of Sonic Colours, and Null Space in Sonic Forces). If we assume that Shadow is almost as fast as Sonic, he could probably do the same.

Shadow I guess. Would go Kat except surviving reentry is a pretty directly relevant feat (I'm assuming she can't just reverse his gravity forever)
