But a preliminary analysis by economists Hilary Hoynes and Jesse Rothstein found that states where unemployment benefits were higher relative to lost wages actually saw less of a drop in employment. In other words, more generous payouts havent been associated with more job loss.

this is true. no work = no hours gained on umemployment which is a lifeline for some to get by during the rough months of the winter.

Correct, because it allowed people to keep spending to keep the consumer economy going. As soon as that goes away there will be a huge drop in spending which will cause an increase in job losses.

Good, stop supporting lazy habits. If they want those benefits then give it to the folks that are actually working. Then you'll see those lazy fuckers wanting to go back to work in a heartbeat.

It's sad that we're getting so worked up over a virus where the average death is over 80 when the national average for death is about 77 years....

Are people being dense or just don't understand that the benefits were not only meant to help support the unemployed but also to keep them at home to reduce the spread of COVID-19?

And hey if you want people to go back to work, give them better wages and hazard pay.

People look at people saying "I'm making more money off of unemployment than I did working" and draw the wrong conclusion from it.

I run a restaurant and have been begging servers to come back. Assistant managers as well. This isn't Subway either, it's a high end steak house where the servers make more than I do some weeks.

All I hear is, "I got that Covid money. I'll com back when that's over". Let that run out.

I personally know somebody who was kicked off for not going back to their job. They had to pay back some of the money too. My employer got 4 employees kicked off who wouldn't come back.

Misleading topic. The article suggests it will be extended in some form, just maybe not the $600 per week and maybe something like $300 per week instead.

Also it's just common sense. If it's taken away with no replacement then literally millions will be left homeless and jobless, and the economy will tank. Every analyst is saying this. The Republicans don't want the economy to tank because it's all they got, especially during an election year. So even if it's for their own selfish reasons, I don't see the government letting it expire with no replacement.

And for the people saying "I can't get my workers to come back because of the $600 bonus!" Um, they ask you weekly if you turned down any work, and if you say yes then you lose your UI. So those people are committing fraud. Don't let people like that ruin it for people who are literally depending on the money to survive.

Yeah this is going to be an absolute disaster, the good thing is that there will need to be serious adjustments made to the economic model we follow after this in order to fix everything everyone has been ignoring for so long. That means the abundance of people paying 50% or more of their income for rent, the criminally low wages being given to the average employee, the fact that more than half of the economy didn't have enough in savings to get them through a year of not working, landlords who mistreat tenants, etc. If we do the right thing we will come out of this a better country, but that's a big if given how petty people in power can be, I think we might have to hang a few politicians to really get the point across.
