Leigh Wannell directing(The Invisible Man) with Ryan Gosling starring.

Seems they finally learned you have to let filmmakers make good movies before you can make an extended universe...

This is good. Dark Universe has promise if they just let it build up naturally with good movies.

To be clear, they aren't talking about making an extended universe, that's just me theorizing, but this will be their second attempt at a movie after The Invisible Man was so damn good.

And if it's not Extended I frankly wouldn't care in the slightest, I just want the classic monsters to be done justice, they're such good stories.

Yeah, Blumhouse is in charge of it now. They're actually making them modestly-budgeted horror films instead of big-budget action movies (which is how they should have been from the beginning).

I cringed reading this because the only movies I've seen of hers(Aeon Flux and Jennifer's Body) fucking sucked but I've heard extremely good things about The Invitation and Destroyer, I need to check them out

Right? Blockbuster worked for The Mummy movies because they didn't take themselves seriously at all. It doesn't work if you cast Tom Cruise and make it super serious...

so wait will this be connected with The Invisible Man? cause it's not the Dark Universe until 2 connected movies exist. so far they keep "rebooting" the dark universe after each first movie. I will believe it when I see it

Jennifer's Body was actually pretty decent and different though. Ahead of it's time imo.

Don't think so, but that's fine. If they go back to what they did with their oldschool monster movies, having crossovers rather than massive setpieces, I'd be happy.

Though I'd also love a new Monster Squad.

What I would like to see is a series of movies like the MCU, not always directly connected but some world building common threads to make it known they all exist in the same world. and then tie it all together with a Van Helsing movie where he takes down all the monsters in the final movie

Personally? I'd like to see them lead up to The League of Extroardinary Gentlemen, but true to the comics because holy shit there are some amazing scenes in there.

They really don't need to make these movies into big crossovers. Just make them good individually lol

They're gonna fuck up Creature from the Black Lagoon though and it's all gonna be for naught smh

I dont' know how well known this is but there have been 3 attempts at founding the Dark Universe. the first one that was originally supposed to start it was that Dracula Untold movie. then the Tom Cruise Mummy. and then Invisible Man

they keep starting over after each movie

In fairness, the universal monsters have a huge history of crossovers and shared actors. There's good precedent for it, and I'd love to see it

I thought it was just The Mummy, followed up by the invisible man. Honestly, I also thought they called it quits after The Mummy.

they did. they made Dracula Untold, then started over. made Mummy. then started over. then made Invisible Man. each movie, at the time they were made was intended to be the start of a cinematic universe. if you never saw Dracula Untold at the end of the movie it actually shows modern day so they could bring the character in line with the other monsters who all live in the modern age

supposedly they wanted to start the franchise with Dracula Untold in 2014, but that didn't work out since the movie was awful. I've also heard the same with I, Frankenstein, but that movie wasn't good either. The Mummy was clearly the best of the three movies that have been intended to start the "dark universe"

Its a shame, I honestly enjoyed the Cruise Mummy. It wasn't great (and should've basically cut Russel Crowe and his whole part out of the movie) but it was a fun enough movie basic action-y movie.

way back when, Universal didn't need a big series to relate all the movies together, they just did it. You don't need to introduce to the audience that Frankenstein and the Wolfman are in the same universe, they just go fight each other. Marvel has kind of ruined movies attempts at franchising tbh,

I haven't seen those movies and I've seen Manos: The Hands of Fate. (Twice.)

To be fair, my disdain for the Cruise Mummy movie comes down to the scene introducing the love interest. She says that Tom Cruise stole the map from her after shooting prematurely during their one night stand. He fires back that she's delusional after being left physically and mentally exhausted by their all night lovemaking session.

If you took that convo out of the film, it might be decent. It was just too much for me to overlook at the time. It legitimately seems like something a 13 year old would write. <_<

I never saw the third Brendan Fraser movie.

It struck me as odd that they didn't make the recent movie the fourth film in the Fraser mummy series. That would've given the Dark Universe two decades of history to start with. Was the third film really so bad that they couldn't have possibly built upon it going forward?

they originally had plans to do a 4th one. the 3rd one ends with a hint at another one. but then it got canceled.

it would have been set in Peru

It does. Pretty sure it's what Kevin Feige says when asked how they did the MCU. Nobody really went into Iron Man expecting it to be the starting point to a cinematic universe. It's a good movie on its own.

They could've made Tom Cruise into Brendan Fraser's great grandson (since Fraser is from the 1930s and Cruise is from the 2010s). Maybe even have Fraser appear as a ghost. When he died, his family placed an amulet in his grave that would bound his soul to this Earth to protect future generations of his family. Great grandson Tom Cruise goes mummy-hunting, ghost Fraser tells him not to, Cruise does so anyway.

I think it would've sold. It would've been no less ridiculous than any of the other concepts in the Cruise Mummy movie.

There's a scene in it where Brendan Fraser dies, and it's revealed the book of the dead can revive him, and he's revived, all within a few minutes and never mentioned again.

And that's one of the less stupid parts of the movie.
