DLC could be a great way to expand a game, and sometimes it is. Far too often is it a way to artificially increase prices.

Well YuGiOh Falsebound Kingdom did have an unlockable Joey Route.

And Kirby Nightmare In Dreamland had MetaKnightmare.

and fighting games had tons of costumes and colors either unlockable or available by default

...I mean what specific features are you looking to parallel here?

back in the day you put a game on the shelf it's gotta have enough there to compete with other titles. these days you just release a 30% complete game and promise the rest will come via dlc. PAID dlc.

You have to give credit to Nintendo when it comes to Splatoon, ARMS, and Kirby Star Allies. All three games got a constant slew of free updates to add new content (characters, stages, weapons, modes, etc.) to the game. Granted, Splatoon 2 also got a paid DLC expansion, but it didn't take away from the free updates it was still getting.

Of course, there's the argument that all those games were rather barebones at launch, and the updates were an attempt to justify the price, but still. They didn't have to do that (as shown with Super Mario Party, which also released barebones and was left as is), but they did.

In the case with Fighting games and DLC, many plebs today wants all characters right from the get go.

Eh, I don't think this is a dynamic? Like, for most games, DLC exists because otherwise you can't have the characters at all, not as a way just to unlock them.

Although I would prefer all of them be unlocked for the multiplayer aspect, either way.

You'd have to unlock characters pre-DLC too via using cheat codes or beating the story mode with a character.

Me neither, but I just won't buy a game that's been clearly chopped up for the DLC buck, either.

Although, this really hasn't been a problem for in a long time. I don't remember the last AAA title that appealed to me.

I'm still angry about Assassin's Creed 2. It was the first game I played with dlc, and made me very anti dlc for years lol.

Yeah but that didn't actually add content to the original game, they were completely separate entities and whether or not you even needed the original game varied by title.

lol i remember how they fucked it up too. forgot to adjust the % tracker to compensate the removed chapter so you can't get 100% without the dlc.

The only thing I'll say is that replaying AC2 as part of the Ezio Collection with the DLC included as part of the main story is a fucking miserable experience.

The only reason the Second Quest exist in Zelda is because they discovered that they had only used half the memory dedicated to dungeon maps when they were done with the maps.
So they decided to use up the rest and create twice as many dungeons.

? The DLC sequences are the best ones in the game aside from the early ones.

Bonfire of the Vanities was and is terrible. Like I can see it being "better" if you actually beat the main ACII story and then play it after, but with it actually being inserted into the main story line and required to be completed to advance it's nothing more than a chore, because at that point you're 100% set to finally take out Rodrigo but it forcibly stops you from doing so.

"Here's a new jumping mechanic" - okay that only gets used here and the game is 90% over at this point.
"Here's 9 targets to kill" - okay they're all over the fucking place and this is basically just AC1 but in one single sequence in another game

The only thing that matters is the speech at the end.

Probably the biggest difference in our perspectives is I think the story in the base game sucks major balls, so I hardly mind a digression. Especially with how bad the ending is. So I can see how it would present a pacing issue if you're enjoying the story.

I haven't played that, yet. :P
.

The best DLC release, imo, is F.E.A.R. Files. You can buy each DLC expansion separately as digital, or both as retail (disc), and play them as stand-alone (F.E.A.R. not required).

[ The expansions have less story development than F.E.A.R. itself, but the action and level design is pure F.E.A.R. ]
